Recap: James Jean – “Rebus” Signing @ Reed Space

After sitting in with James Jean (featured) and catching his motivational talk to students at Pratt, we attended the signing for his newly released Rebus book at Reed Space. As expected, the place was packed with fans eager to get some time with the artist. As previewed, the event also launched his latest Lotus War Pyramid print. Admirably, James left no man behind as he stayed past closing to make sure his fans all got his John Hancock and doodle. Check it out after the jump.

Yesterday, AM stopped by PULSE, one of the satellite fairs of Art Basel Week Miami, and we were greeted by a pretty solid selection of art work from various artists and their galleries (after the fixed a lighting issue). Last weekend, Spanish street muralist Aryz opened his first solo show in his home country at the Montana Gallery. Reprising some of his colorful and loose outdoor works for the indoor setting with paintings and wall murals, the Barcelona-based artist showed us glimpses of the reasons behind his rising popularity. Basel Week Miami ’11: Underbelly Show

Last night, AM attended the opening of the Underbelly show in Miami featuring an impressive lineup of artists who all have participated in the surreptitious underground street art and graffiti project in New York. Not only did each artist contribute a quality work to the show, most of them were large scale. Anchoring the exhibition near the entrance was a wall of flatscreen TV’s all simultaneously playing high speed timelapse loops of the artists as they worked on murals for the project. Videos: Aaron Horkey x Mondo x Moon Editions – “True Grit” Print

Aaron Horkey fans out there, check out this new video put together by our friend Patrick Kawahara of a new limited edition dropping tomorrow (December 2nd) at a random time at Mondo. True Grit, produced by Moon Editions, is a laser engraved on Latvian Birch (dyed and laquered), in an edition of 33, 14.75″ x 36″ and will cost $450.

Releases: Mark Ryden – “Pinxit” Book

Today marks the release by Taschen of Mark Ryden’s Pinxit (the title is a playful references to both the preponderance of pink in his work and the Latin word meaning “he painted this,” which artists like Ingres and Rubens once appended after their signatures according to Erratic Phenomena). The publication is the most comprehensive survey of Ryden’s 20 year career and works ever and if the book to have if you are a fan although it will set you back a pretty penny. As promised, here are photos from the Ferrari x Marco Brambilla’s party that we attended earlier this week at Art Basel Week Miami. The centerpiece was the collaborative 3-D video installation from Brambilla entitled RPM (see the video here) that entertained guests from the worlds of art, fashion, design and music. The event was also the debut of the new 2012 model of the 458 Italia Spider. Openings: Interesni Kazki – “Nothing Special” @ Mid-City Arts

Last weekend, Mid-City Arts located in Los Angeles, California hosted the first U.S. exhibit by Ukrainian artists Interesni Kazki. Titled Nothing Special, the exhibit featured a collection of work which mirror their big scale murals both in style and in theme. Divided into different color palettes, each painting featured topics ranging from religion to greed. With so much eye candy at the main fair, we had to split out photos into two helpings. Headlining this second set are these clusters from Bay Area legend Barry McGee at the Cheim & Read booth featuring some abstract representations of spray cans arranged in a new way with some novel patterns. Other strong pieces seen were a unique piece from Mark Ryden utilizing a new technique, an oil from Lisa Yuskavage, various shiny objects from Anish Kapoor, and much more. See it all […]
