Streets: D*Face (Melbourne)

With D*Face’s (interviewed) solo opening tonight at the Metro Gallery, it’s about time we updated you on his work in the streets leading up to the show. From the looks of things, his oversized spray can installations seem to be popular, but check out the other photos of D getting his logo up all over Melbourne, as well as an invitation to join the Order of the Wings. Pics after the jump…

Openings: Chuck Close @ Blum & Poe

One of the most celebrated and revered American artists working today, Chuck Close recently unveiled an exhibition of brand new paintings, prints, and tapestries at Culver City’s Blum and Poe.  This is Close’s first solo show with the blue chip gallery and according to them, it “represents the most significant body of work assembled in Los Angeles in sixteen years.” The spectacular exhibition, which occupies the gallery’s entire first floor, provides ample evidence of the artist’s masterful skills as a painter, photographer, and printmaker and […]

FIAC Coverage

Following the Frieze week in London (covered here), AM headed off to Paris to visit the FIAC, the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain in Paris at the Grand Palais, host to 168 galleries. While Frieze focuses exclusively on contemporary art, the FIAC also combines early 20th century modern art with the contemporary. Of interest, Karl Lagerfeld designed the booth of Zurich’s Gallery Gmurzynska for the Rebels curated by Isabelle Bscher and featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol as well as Banksy and Scott Campbell. After hosting the first part of their 25th anniversary group show last month, La Luz De Jesus makes room for the opening of round two of the festivities on November 4th. With such a rich and storied tradition and one of the early visionaries in the game, Billy Shire, as the gallery owner, the long list of participants necessitated splitting the celebration into two parts. Openings: Tessar Lo – “The Dying Wishes,” @ Jaski Gallery

Last weekend, the Jaski Gallery provided the walls for Tessar Lo as he presented a whole new collection of a paintings for fans in Amsterdam. Entitled The Dying Wishes, the new work built on an abstracted style that the Toronto-based artist has been developing for a while now. The continued refinement and practice certainly seems to have paid off as the resulting pieces on display were rich in palette, balanced in composition, and visually lush. Take a look at more opening photos after the jump courtesy of Erratic Phenomena […]

Openings: TIN – “Internal Clock” @ Last Rites

Earlier this month, alongside Laurie Lipton, another solo entitled Internal Clock was put on display from painter Tin (interviewed) This second showing with the New York gallery featured his world of human and animal subjects whose bodies have been intermingled with machinery creating bionic hybrids, although it looks as though half of the paintings don’t touch on this theme. While maintaining the sensual pin-up influence from his first career as a pinup artist, Tin continues to further explore his imagination with these newest pastel renderings. […]

Art Focus: Matthew Cox

This week, our Art Focus is on Philadelphia-based Matthew Cox, whose series of medical x-rays and embroidery recently caught our eyes. The Parsons and Otis trained artist has taken radiographs and stitched back in his imagined content partially over the skeletal elements leading to an intriguing new mesh of reality and the imaginary. For those interested, Embroidered X-Rays will be showing at the Packer/Schopf Gallery (Booth E-407) this year at PULSE in Miami, part of Art Basel Week. This particular series of works is just one […]

Openings: AJ Fosik – “Time Kills All Gods” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Opening along side Josh Keyes at Jonathan Levine was sculptural artist AJ Fosik. The show entitled Time Kills All Gods is a tour de force as AJ brings the hammer with this latest endeavor. We’ve long been impressed at his creative wood and metal workings that depict unique animals, but this time he ups the ante with a serious boost of imaginative mythical creatures while tackling the ideas of religion and the worship of false idols.
