Showing: Yue Minjun – “The Road” @ Pace Gallery (Beijing)

The Beijing branch of Pace Gallery is currently showing a selection of new works from Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun. Exhibiting in his home city, the painter famous for his smiling self-portraits has included Christian iconography in this latest set of canvases as well as recent work leading the viewer to think about the role of Western influence in China. Is the ubiquitous grin pervading these works laughing at or laughing with the religious symbolism or is it just the Minjun’s signature imagery innocently translated […]

Openings: “Crazy 4 Cult 5” @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Last night on Melrose, Gallery 1988 put one on for the fanboys and film buffs out there with their fifth annual Crazy 4 Cult show. More opening photos from the Birdman after the jump…

Openings: Nathan Ota & Risk – “That Was Then, This Is Now” @ 111 Minna

Thursday evening, 111 Minna in San Francisco hosted the opening for Nathan Ota and Risk’s collaborative exhibition, That Was Then, This Is Now. The two respected graffiti artists first collaborated over 25 years in high school, but had lost contact ever since. It was not until last year, when Greg Simkins and Jeff Soto worked on murals with Risk (and knew about the two’s previous history), that it was suggested that they reconnect again. This lead to a collaborative mural at Hurley Space last October […]

Openings: Brett Amory – “Dark Light” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Brett Amory’s (interviewed) latest NY solo Dark Light (previewed) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new series of paintings is a departure from Brett’s daytime series as the subjects are based in the still of night. However, Brett transitions his subjects and urban environments effortlessly into the emptiness of nocturnal darkness. We felt the lost and lonely feelings which we usually experienced in Brett’s works, but with the sun taken away, it felt even a little eerie as desolation wrapped around his signature […]

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Listen and Learn” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

A couple weeks ago, AM caught the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) exhibition at the Joshua Liner Gallery. The show Listen and Learn showcased not only the bold and complex characters that make up Jeremy’s cartoon-like style, but also the stories of multiple angles told from the viewpoints of different people from all walks of life. With the Snoop Dogg collaboration video we teased you with for comparison, you can see the diversity of focus as the other subjects included skateboarders, strippers, athletes, and more. Each person not […]

Previews: Shepard Fairey – “Citykids” @ Wooster Street Social Club

You may remember last year during the finals days of Deitch Projects, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his solo exhibition May Day in New York. What you may not have seen was a special community mural project he created with the Citykids Foundation. AM was on hand to capture Shepard and his crew engaging intercity youths to create a series of twelve 8 x 4 foot panels as part of the A Positive Thought Cannot Be Denied project. From July 6th to July 18th, the Wooster Street Social Club […]

Tomorrow night (July 8th) in Melrose, Gallery 1988 will host one of their most popular annual shows – Crazy 4 Cult.  For this 5th rendition of the group show where artists are asked to interpret some of their favorite cult movies, there are plenty of regulars as well as new artists to get to know.
