Viewpoints: Peter Kennard + War Boutique — ‘shooting@earth’ @ Black Rat Projects

Black Rat Projects in London recently hosted shooting@earth, a three-day event running from 5 to 7 May which launched @earth, the new photo-essay by Peter Kennard, assisted by Tarek Salhany. The exhibition also showcased a collection of works that packed a punch by former armour designer, War Boutique. Although AM felt War Boutique’s art was sometimes a little easy or obvious, at other times it was remarkable: You think it has the subtlety of an old Panzer IV, that you can see it coming from […]

Openings: Henry Gunderson – “New Work” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

Last Thursday night, Fecal Face Dot Gallery opened its doors to Henry Gunderson’s second solo show at the SF gallery (the first was in 2009, covered here). The exhibition consisted of of works in colored pencil & ink on paper (with some pieces affixed onto a bulletin board), his mixed media Linear series (which are comprised of the arrangement of various repeated inanimate objects), as well as a video sculpture reflecting his skateboarding lifestyle. Check out photos from the opening after the jump…

Openings: ESPO – “Days” @ V1 Gallery

Steve Powers aka ESPO has had a busy few weeks.  First, came his part in the time-consuming Street Market installation at the MOCA for the historic Art in the Streets exhibition. Then, last Friday in Copenhagen, he opened his latest solo show at the V1 Gallery entitled simply Days. A fitting title as the work in the show includes some of his daily metaltations ruminating on the complexities of everyday life with his poetic world play and signature visual language using enamel paint on metal. […]

Openings: Marci Washington – “For Forever I’ll Be Here” @ Rena Bransten Gallery

Thursday night saw the reception of Marci Washington’s latest exhibition at the Rena Bransten Gallery. Her work typically consists of illustrations telling the narrative of a story that does not exist, which gives the work a supernatural, haunting and cinematic feel. For this show For Forever I’ll Be Here (which is based off of a Fever Ray song), she explores the common thread throughout time that stays constant, and forever influences our attempts at making the world a better place. This is achieved by producing […]

Videos: POW WOW Hawai’i 2011 Part I

One of the people we connected with in Hawaii for the POW WOW event (covered) was videographer Mikey Inouye. It seemed him and his crew were everywhere at the same time documenting all the action. The fruits of their labor are now evident with this new video. In association with Hypebeast TV, this is the first in a three part series featuring footage of the setup, live painting, and interviews with the participants including founder Jasper Wong. If you like what you see, you can […]

Openings: Crash, Freedom, and Risk – “Blurring the Lines” @ Corey Helford Gallery

With the overwhelming success of Art in the Streets, it seems like LA can’t seem to get enough of street art lately. And for hardcore graffiti fans, one couldn’t ask for more than a group show curated by Roger Gastman, featuring New York legends CRASH and FREEDOM, alongside historic LA pioneer and figurehead RISK. Last Saturday, AM attended the opening of Blurring the Lines at Corey Helford Gallery, which features new work by these East and West Coast graffiti masters. This exhibition marks a moment […]

Focus: Invader – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

With the MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition on track to potentially break attendance records and Invader’s recent LAPD arrest for making art in the streets of LA, we thought that it’s time for another Art Focus – in the form of little Easter Eggs left by our friend Invader. With all the spectacular art and installations at this exhibition, it’s easy to get lost in the thick of things. Invader took an interesting approach to making his mark at the MOCA while he stayed […]

Openings: Hideaki Kawashima – “Turning” @ Richard Heller Gallery

Last evening, AM stopped by the Bergamot Station complex to check out what looks to be the first US exhibition of Hideaki Kawashima at Richard Heller Gallery. As referenced by the title of the show, Turning, this wonderful collection of emotive paintings from the Tokyo-based artist represents an exploration of a new direction that we first saw at Art Basel Miami last year. Labelled “developmental” modestly by Hideaki, these more realistic full body (or at least upper body) works are a departure from his previous […]
