Openings: INLE @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

For those of you who missed the INLE group show curated by Greg Simkin’s (featured) at Gallery 1988’s Melrose location, here is a video from Hurley that summarizes the show. Not only is there some nice footage of the hung paintings, Greg is also interviewed on camera and talks about how the show is based on Watership Down and the concepts behind the exhibition. Volta ’11 – Jim Houser @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s entry to this year’s VOLTA art fair during this year’s Armory Week was artist Jim Houser. The Philly-based artist was in full effect as he brought a beautiful collection of fresh works that spanned an array of sizes and mediums. Much like his last show at Subliminal Projects, Mr. Houser took time customizing the booth with his unique installations including his custom soundtrack. Check it out after the jump.

As it seems that themed shows are all the rage these days, we knew it would come to this eventually. The Opera Gallery in New York will be hosting an exhibition curated by Ron English (featured), whose “last supper” reinterpretation can be seen above, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of South Park, Comedy Central’s highest rated and longest running program. Slow Your Roll, the first UK solo show by Brooklyn art duo Skewville, launched last Friday at High Roller Society. AM took advantage of the East London gallery’s new Sunday opening hours to visit over the weekend in the calm of a non-preview atmosphere. On the way, we spotted one of Skewville’s recent outdoor pieces, featuring the painted and foam-stamped word “BEEF” aptly done on the shopfront shutter of a local butcher. Openings: Scott Campbell – “Noblesse Oblige” @ OHWOW (LA)

Last Saturday saw the grand opening of OHWOW Gallery’s Los Angeles location. Batting in the lead-off exhibition spot was New York’s tattoo rooted artist Scott Campbell with his latest body of work entitled Noblesse Oblige (previewed). The name of the show implies that “whoever claims to be noble must conduct their life accordingly and in a manner that conforms to one’s position.” In other words, keep it real. On Thursday, we attended the opening of the new show by Lamar Peterson at Chelsea’s Fredericks & Freiser. Peterson’s talent lies in his ability to immediately draw in viewers, using bright colors, smiling faces and trompe l’oeil elementary-school style borders to create work that at first glance seems easy and accessible. With his next exhibition, The Magician’s Garden (teased), right around the corner, Josh Keyes (interviewed) has taken some time out to once again teamed up with Tiny Showcase for their fifth collaborative effort to raise funds in the name of charity. Since his last public art intervention earlier this year (covered), Paris-based street artist, LUDO (interviewed), has been working tirelessly within the indoor confines of his studio, preparing for his first full fledged solo exhibition. When AM recently visited Shepard Fairey at his studio in Los Angeles, he also took us on a private tour of Subliminal Project’s latest exhibition Too Fast To Live, Too Young to Die.
