Portland-based Japanese modern pop artist, Yumiko Kayukawa opened her seventh solo show at Shooting Gallery on Saturday in SF. The show featured her signature acrylic and ink based works full of color, girls, animals, personal narrative, and imagination. The show’s title, “Rock You in a Tatami Room” is derived from a term Yumiko came up with while creating the works in the show, which reflects her career and life in the U.S., as well as her style. Teasers: Lamar Peterson @ Fredericks & Freiser

Opening tonight at Chelsea’s Fredericks & Freiser Gallery is the latest solo exhibition by talented painter Lamar Peterson. Peterson, who has shown with Deitch Projects and LA’s Richard Heller Gallery, works in bright hyper-real colors to create surrealistic and cartoonish portrayals of characters—often African American families—which are at once humorous and unsettling. In recent bodies of work, he has expanded his range beyond painting to include collage and mixed media pieces, so we’re very excited to see what he has in store for this show.

Berlin-based American artist, Brad Downey, has been keeping himself rather busy lately. His first show in the Middle East, We Are Beginning: Personal Projects in Public Spaces, opened this week at Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai. In addition, Downey’s work features in the group show What Is Contemporary Art? which opened Friday at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark. Highlights: The Affordable Art Fair, London

The Affordable Art Fair was in London at Battersea Park last week, with no piece on display exceeding the cap of £4,000. We like the fair’s aim of making contemporary art accessible to everyone. Many others clearly appreciate the concept as well, since the AAF is now in its thirteenth year. Last week, the Live On Sunset venue in Los Angeles hosted the Travis Barker’s Give The Drummer Some Art show. We aren’t sure if all the art is really going to the Blink-182 drummer but it would make for an interesting addition to his collection with artists like David Choe, Jeff Soto, Chris Peters, Pushead, Haze, Mike Giant, and Mr. Cartoon in the lineup. Charity / Releases: David Choe – “Red Moon” Edition

Despite being imprisoned last time he was in Japan and forbidden to return, David Choe (featured) still has love for the Land of the Rising Sun. This new print (limited to 88) entitled “Red Moon” will be released today at 6 pm PST at Trapeze Editions with 100% of the proceeds going to the relief efforts in Japan. Foster + Partners wins Hong Kong cultural district battle

The West Kowloon Cultural District, which we first told you about in 2009, has finally chosen a design for the planned $2.8 billion 50 hectare arts hub. The firm to win out were the favorites, Foster + Partners, the architects who were also responsible for the breathtaking Chep Lap Kok Airport, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, and the Bilbao Metro, although the original canopy design has been scrapped.
