Kent Williams, who recently showcased a fantastic body of work in New Mexico (covered), is already working on some paintings for a new solo scheduled for May in Los Angeles. The show planned for Merry Karnowsky Gallery will include this painting, New Spring, currently on display at the LCAD MFA Faculty and Students Exhibition in Irvine, CA. Another probable piece after the jump…

Openings: Gary Baseman – “Walking Through Walls” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Gifting NYC with joint solo shows along with Andy Kehoe (covered), Gary Baseman offered up a more somber and personal body of work at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery last Saturday night entitled Walking Through Walls.  Experimenting with combining his painting techniques with collage, silkscreen, and found photographs from his collection, Gary built a show that centered around the notion of “walking through walls – moving through the different divisions of society, challenging expectations, and finding freedom.” The new works also featured another common theme of […]

Installation: Ryan Travis Christian – “Sad Sacks” @ Guerrero Gallery

Tonight, May 12th, Ryan Travis Christian returns to Guerrero Gallery for the next installment of his works. In what looks like a continuation of works from his previous show last year at GG, Ryan moves to the main room with his classic use of blacks, whites and everything in between. This time, he expands his crazy visual patterns and distinct subject matter to include sex, parties, dreams and more. Look for a large but intricate multi-media installation that should be memorable to behold. Check it […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Women: The Blacklight Paintings” @ Standard NY’s Le Bain

Armory Week can get a little overwhelming with the number of formal fairs which one can attend. By the end of the week, we needed to blow off some steam. It’s a good thing Ryan McGinness knows how to throw a party/exhibition. Teaming up with Country Club x The Standard, Mr. McGinness transformed Le Bain (one of Manhattan’s hottest clubs) into a living gallery. Utilizing his blacklight techniques, he again converted the ladies of the brass pole into organic subjects to compliment the eye-popping artworks which […]

Armory Week ’11 – Christina Ray @ Pulse NY

One of the booths we really enjoyed at this year’s Pulse fair was that of Christina Ray, who presented a solo exhibition by artist Beka Goedde. Goedde’s work is very much based in printmaking, using such techniques as etching and Chine-collé (the application of thin colored paper as color) to create unique mixed media pieces that sometimes resemble simple collage and other times look more like complex abstract paintings. Christina Ray also presented a Pulse Project by Ben Wolf. Located near the entrance of the […]

Interviews / Releases: Mear One x Modern Multiples – “Global Uprising” 9 Color Serigraph

Mear One has just completed a new silk screen with Modern Multiples, to be released this Friday. It will be a hand separated, nine-color serigraph in an edition of 100, available at 1 pm PST through the Baurmann Gallery, who published the print. The subject is striking yet universal: a triumphant scene of victory as a city square is completely overrun by protesters, drawing upon recent protests in the Middle East, Europe, and the U.S. The scene is triumphant and hopeful, as a helicopter beams […]

Openings: Andy Kehoe – “Strange Wanderings” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last weekend, the Strange Wanderings of Andy Kehoe led him to the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York as his solo show opened alongside Gary Baseman’s. As you can probably imagine, with the following the two have, the space was packed with collectors, art enthusiasts, and the local artist community. Andy didn’t disappoint as he brought along paintings filled with rich autumn landscapes and woodland creatures for all to enjoy. More opening pics after the jump…

Previews: Mike Stilkey – ‘Certainly Not Without Serenade’ @ Gilman Contemporary Gallery, Ketchum, Idaho

Mike Stilkey (interviewed) brings his gravity defying book sculptures and paintings to Idaho this week in the form of his solo exhibition Certainly Not Without Serenade to Gilman Contemporary Gallery in Ketchum. Opening on Friday, March 11th, this is Mike’s second solo exhibit with the gallery. Idaho is not usually on our radar, but if you are in the area then this is sure to be a must see as Stilkey’s work is a wonder to take in first hand. Using found books as his canvas, […]

Armory Week ’11: Scope

Armory Week’s merry go round of satellite fairs would not be complete without the inclusion of Scope. Held at a large warehouse facility on the west wide of the island, the location reflected the grass root and creative vibe that gave us numerous sound related installations and a really gaudy ode to decadence. Oh, did we mention that there was an artistic experiment that featured five fraternity boys stuck in a box for four hours with nothing but a window, a microphone, cases of beer, […]

Videos: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Resplandor y Soledad” @ MUAC (Mexico City)

Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, who recently orchestrated the New Year’s fireworks for Taipei, recently turned his attention to a different part of the world. His exhibition Resplandor y Soledad or Splendor and Solitude is currently showing at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City (runs through March 20th), his first solo in Latin America. It features a representation of Lake Texcoco made famous in the legend of the founding of the city of Tenochititian surrounded by 14 large scale gunpowder drawings. Take a look […]
