Highlights: Recommended openings (June 3rd – June 6th)

June has begun and with it an onslaught of shows across the globe. Leading the charge this week, due to the sheer breadth of shows, is Los Angeles. Fame Fest ’10: Os Gemeos

Vhils, Swoon, and Ben Wolf have already all left their mark in Grottaglie for this years Fame Festival. Looks like next up on the list are Os Gemeos as they they took in the sights of the Italian town as well as left some sights of their own. New Kozyndan Panoramic – “The Best Sushi in Town”

Opening tomorrow or today, June 4th, depending what time zone you are in will be Kozyndan’s three-day exhibition at the Nelly Duff Gallery entitled “And Then There Were None”. Art HK ’10: Aya Takano

Another artist that we were looking forward to seeing at Art HK 10 was Murakami protege, Aya Takano. The Japanese artist, whose show we also covered in NY, was exhibiting at the Emmanuel Perrotin booth and has been one of the highlights among strong sales at this year’s Hong Kong Internation Art Fair, apparently selling several of her pieces to Chinese and Korean collectors. Christopher Wool @ Gagosian Gallery (Rome)

It’s been a while since we’ve covered anything in Rome, but today that changes. Gagosian Gallery brings one of today’s most important artists to the historic city with eight new paintings by Christopher Wool. The silkscreen and enamel large works on linen feature Wool’s signature gestures and technique. On top of the silkscreen foundation, Wool employs stenciling, rolling, dripping, dragging, and spray-painting. David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, Colorado continues it’s program of showing exciting and affordable young artists next month with the wonderfully titled “I had no defense, so I lied” solo exhibition by Ricky Allman, opening on Thursday, June 3rd. AM recently visited with Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) at his Los Angeles studio. Taking time out of his marathon work sessions, he gave us a sneak preview into his coming show “Familiar Strangers” (teased) at LeBasse Projects which opens June 12th. The show is comprised of not only his signature “east meets west” brand of technique and imagery, but marks the expansion of Yoskay’s work into ceramics and clay modeling. Benefit: Nick Walker – The Helium Foundation Charity Auction

We recently brought you news of a new Nick Walker stencil on the streets of Bristol and here is a piece with related imagery that will be available at auction soon. The unique canvas piece above is entitled “Addiction”, created and donated by Nick for an auction benefiting the Parachute Regiment Charity to be held by The Helium Foundation at London’s Guildhall on June 3rd.
