Streets: EINE in Japan

It looks like UK street artist EINE was over in Japan for a show at Gallery 503 recently. Apparently, he had a lot of time to throw up some pieces in the street, mainly due to getting stranded because of the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland.  Eine ended up painting 22 shutters and walls, though it looks like he only used the English alphabet for his fans in Tokyo… Take a look at more images after the jump.

Openings: Shepard Fairey – “May Day” @ Deitch Projects (Part 1)

Last weekend, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his latest solo show “May Day” at the legendary Deitch Projects in New York City and effectively shut down a small part of SoHo with the crowds he drew at the opening night festivities. It seemed as though anyone and everyone who had an interest in art was in attendance. Celebrities, artists, gallerists, art affectionados, collectors and loyal fans of Obey Giant came from all over the world to attend the show. Fans traveled from Germany, Memphis, San Francisco, […]

Preview: Allison Sommers – “Schlareffenland” @ Thinkspace Gallery

This weekend, Allison Sommers (interviewed) will be bringing her merry band of longnecks to Culver City for an exhibition at the Thinkspace Gallery. This time, she has given a name to the strange yet beautiful world her characters inhabit – Schlareffenland, also the title of the show. Based off some of the most imaginative worlds we have seen, this new body of work will include incredibly detailed paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Take a look at some preview images after the jump as well as taking […]

Interviews / Preview: Ana Bagayan – “Flutter” @ Mondo Bizzarro Gallery

Ana Bagayan should need no introduction to regular readers of AM, her stunning portraiture and contemporary figurative work being a regular feature here as her work continues to evolve with each and every new show. Entitled “Flutter”, Ana’s latest solo exhibition and her first body of work to be shown overseas, opens this weekend on Saturday 8th May at Rome’s Mondo Bizzaro Gallery. We caught up with Ana ahead of the opening. Read on for our interview and some further preview images after the jump.

Openings: Hush – “Passing Through” @ Shooting Gallery

Completing a trio of great shows (along with ABOVE and Blek le Rat) on a great art weekend for SF was Hush’s (interviewed) “Passing Through” at the Shooting Gallery. In somewhat of a departure from previous work as hinted by our studio visit, the Newcastle-based artist, known for his anime influenced imagery, has been experimenting with a more realistic form with some great results, but as you can see from the triptych above, he isn’t opposed to mixing the old with the new. More opening […]

Auctions: Picasso Painting Sells For Record Price

History was made in the art world last night.  There is a new record holder for priciest work ever sold at auction and that distinction belongs to Nude, Green Leaves and Bust by Pablo Picasso. The 1932 painting sold for $106,482,500 (after auction fees were accounted for) to an unidentified phone bidder at Christie’s. The sale brings huge publicity, hope, and optimism to the start of the auction season. This is a defining moment that many will point to as evidence of confidence in the […]

Openings: Scott Campbell – “If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long” @ OHWOW

One our stops in this past weekend’s art tour de force in NYC was Scott Campbell’s “If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long”. Hailing from Miami, OHWOW Gallery created a hip Soho pop-up space that was new to AM eyes. The minty fresh location drew boatloads to the opening night festivities. Scott’s latest series of works definitely “wowed” us even more than anticipated than from our teaser and preview articles. Present were his signature cut-currency sculptures, intricate in design and often depicting objects, animals or slogans. […]
