After stellar shows in Cologne, Paris and London, street artist Roa moves on the next big city – New York. We expect some large installs in the Big Apple as the Belgium-based artist likes to go big whether inside or outside of the gallery. It’s been a while since we posted the teaser for the “Tiger Tiger Burning Bright” group show at Roq La Rue Gallery, but now’s the time to reveal more of the paintings as the opening is this Friday, May 14th. AM attended the opening of Shawn Barber’s (featured) solo show – “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle” at Joshua Liner Gallery a couple weeks ago. The ever-talented tattoo master created a new series of works based on various on the tattooing paraphernalia and portraiture of his friends. The intense paintings looked radiant in our interview with Shawn and in person, and they seem to jump out at the viewers. As we touched on briefly in our Overtime (our weekly summary of art news that doesn’t make it as full articles) last week, a rare retrospective has been organized for the late Jean-Michel Basquiat at Fondation Beyeler in Switzerland for what would have been his 50th birthday. Portuguese artist, Pedro Matos aka DRONE, will be opening a new exhibition in June at the Montana Shop & Gallery in Lisbon. Mixing his figurative painting skills with urban sensibility, the young and self-trained artist works on capturing the “fading” and slowly “disappearing” under-privileged in our society, often placing his gritty work on the streets. After a three year self-imposed hiatus from gallery shows (save a few group show contributions), Blaine Fontana made a comeback last weekend to the gallery scene with his solo show “The Golden Record” at Lebasse Projects in Los Angeles (our pics from the opening here). The London book launch for Gestalten’s “Beyond the Street: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art” took place on Friday last week at Phillips de Pury’s Victoria headquarters to a healthy crowd and with a celebratory vibe. Many of the book’s contributors joined the editors of the book, Patrick Nguyen and Stuart Mackenzie, to toast the success of just how well this mammoth publication turned out. Celebrated street turned contemporary artist, KAWS, will be opening his first solo museum exhibition next month at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. The show will include “his most recent paintings, sculptures, and drawings, as well as a survey of apparel, product and graphic designs, and limited-edition toys.” We can’t wait to see the whole setup, but we imagine it will be similar to what our friend Pirovino has in his collection (well, at least the 4 Foot KAWS figures). Teaser: Yoshitomo Nara – “Ceramic Works” @ Tomio Koyama Gallery

Acclaimed Japanese pop artist Yoshitomo Nara will be opening a new show this weekend, May 15th, at the Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo. Nara has been training for over a year with the use of ceramics at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park and this will his exciting debut show in this new medium.
