Preview: “Movers & Shakers II” @ Ronin Gallery

Thinkspace gallery made a move into Culver City last month, and as one gallery leaves to take a step up, another moves in to fill it’s boots. Relocating from Echo Park, The Ronin Gallery now occupies the popular Silverlake spot, and after a few modifications to the space, opened it’s inaugural group show “NEX GEN” last month. This month sees Ronin bringing in the talent with another grouping of new contemporary artists in “Movers & Shakers II”, the follow up to last year’s LA event […]

As we mentioned in a previous post, French photographer JR’s film “Women Are Heroes” has been selected for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. Bringing his project full circle, the movie documents his travels around the world photographing victimized and impoverished women and then pasting them up in their own neighborhoods and towns, sending a powerful message of hope and strength. Take a look at a special print made available for this occasion as well as other planned screening dates after the jump…

Openings: Joao Ruas – “III” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last week, AM had the pleasure of attending the opening of Sao Paulo native Joao Ruas’ show “III” at the recently christened new Thinkspace location. The young artist who replaced James Jean at the helm of the “Fables” franchise was on hand to greet guests who made it out to see his show. Weaving a collection of dreamy imagery, Joao used a diverse mix of oil, acrylic and other mediums while exercising his talents on his mysterious subjects. See the opening night action after the […]

Openings: Yoshitomo Nara – “Ceramic Works” @ Tomio Koyama Gallery

Yoshitomo Nara unveiled a new series of works at Japan’s Tomio Koyama Gallery yesterday. As we mentioned earlier, Nara has been very busy honing his talents on this new medium for over a year at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. The results of his hard work clearly showed in his 20 or so ceramic sculptures both large and small in scale. Of course, what would a Nara show be without some of his signature drawings. It’s very exciting when an artist explore a new medium outside […]

Openings: Matt Leines – “These Songs Are True” @ Guerrero Gallery

Guerrero Gallery held it down with a cool series of work from Matt Leines that showed in their space starting last week. Opening along side Alex Lukas (covered), Matt’s latest show “These Songs Are True” took us to his imagined world where cultural elements are mixed with pseudo historical references to create a society of crazy human-esqe characters. Colorful masks or faces stare back at you with geometric shapes and colors forming fascinating environments. Check it out after the jump.
