Preview: Richard Colman – “Keep Out the Light” @ New Image Art

Set to open tonight at New Image Art is Richard Colman’s “Keep Out the Light”. The new body of work will feature some of the artist’s signature imagery with increasingly frantic geometric patterns interspersed with the interconnected characters that inhabit his paintings. The bright and beautiful hues of his configurations provide a stark contrast to his violent and often overtly sexual world. Our friend Tom at Virtu Art Gallery, the publisher of the print, has again generously donated a rather special giveaway item for AM’s readers. Art Stars – Polo Jeans Project

Starting early this year, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren began commissioning artists all over Europe to customize star shaped “canvases” made from denim. This list includes many artists that readers of AM will be familiar with including Matt Small (interviewed), Pam Glew, Pedro Matos, Herakut (interviewed), Delta, and Case. Last weekend, Allison Sommers (interviewed) opened her show “Schlareffenland” at the Thinkspace Gallery alongside Joao Ruas. Showing off her vivid imagination as well as a predilection for sausages, Allison wowed the crowd with her strikingly detailed paintings, sculptures, and sausage jello – yes, sausage jello. Following on from the fantastic preview evening last Friday, Corey Helford Gallery’s “Art from the New World” continued to draw in the crowds on Saturday afternoon for the public opening consisting of a guided tour of the exhibition hosted by the inimitable Gary Baseman and a meet-and-greet signing session with the artists. Os Gemeos unleashed their latest show across the Atlantic in Portugal named “Pra quem mora lá, o céu é lá” (To who lives there, heaven is there). From the looks of this exhibition hosted in Lisbon’s Museu Colecção Berardo, it appears to be as heavenly as the title indicates. AM was on hand to experience the private opening of Charming Baker’s latest show “Stupid has a new Hero” at New York Studio Gallery (previewed). The pop up show welcomed a slew of friends and fans of London-based artist’s clever yet abrasive paintings. Preview: Logan Hicks, Anthony Lister, and Michael Kalish @ Opera Gallery (NY)

Logan Hicks (interviewed), Anthony Lister’s (interviewed), and Michael Kalish are teaming up for a three person show opening this week (May 19th) at the Opera Gallery in New York. Hicks will be bringing some new stencils including what appear to be some more minimalistic work. Lister looks to be exhibiting some older works and Kalish (whom we are not familiar with) is contributing some pop icon pieces constructed partially with license plates. Thinkspace gallery made a move into Culver City last month, and as one gallery leaves to take a step up, another moves in to fill it’s boots.
