Openings: Blaine Fontana – “The Golden Record” @ Lebasse Projects

In what sounds like an eternity in the fast-moving and evolving world of contemporary art, Blaine Fontana has just opened his first gallery exhibition in 3 years. He returns with a tightly constructed, cohesive body of work with a unified theme. The solo exhibition at LeBasse Projects in Culver City features 13 paintings, using acrylic and almost entirely on board, all intricately and exquisitely rendered by the Otis graduate. Herbert Baglione’s solo at the Iguapop Gallery in Spain opened last weekend with a series of new paintings, wall murals, and installations. We heard much from one of our favorite Brazilian artists since his show in SF, but it look as though “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” is another beautiful body of work with a cooler and more muted pallette. Openings – New Directions @ White Walls

Opening alongside “Meticulous Engagements” at the Shooting Gallery was White Walls’ “New Directions” a group show consisting of five talents that the gallery has been building this past year. Featuring Mark Warren Jacques (pictured above), Henry Gunderson (interviewed), Akira Beard, Robert Burden, and Cheryl Molnar. New Directions is a look at several distinctly different and unique styles each exploring their own directions. Full photo set after the jump.

Sometimes, we get spoiled at AM with behind the scenes studio visits where we see much of the art work before show openings, but in this case, our visit to David Choe’s (featured) studio definitely did not spoil our appetite for his latest series of works which were revealed at a private opening last night. From the return of David Choe at Lazarides’ Beverly Hills pop-up space and Phil Frost’s much anticipated LA solo debut at Known Gallery to a very ambitious show at Scion curated by Roger Gastman, LA is the place to be yet again this weekend. Kristen Schiele’s solo show “Elektra” opened this past Wednesday evening at New York’s Sloan Fine Art. We love Kristen’s use of multiple mediums and her thrilling mixture of oil paint and screen print in her compositions featuring skewed architecture and a cast of 70’s femme noir characters.
