Preview: Simon Birch – “Small Wonder” @ 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong

Simon Birch has been busy preparing for “Small Wonder,” his major solo exhibition opening Wednesday, November 25th at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong. The show consists of thirteen dramatic large scale oil paintings. Born in Brighton, England, Simon left the UK to spend time traveling through Australia before relocating to Hong Kong in the mid-nineties. From his early days as a construction worker to his first self-financed exhibition, he has now become one of Asia’s most sought-after emerging artists. In anticipation of the show, we bring […]

Openings: Kelsey Brookes – “Bigger, Brighter, Bolder” @ Quint Contemporary Art

Last Friday, Kelsey Brookes opened his show “Bigger, Brighter, Bolder” in San Diego at Quint Contemporary Art. Based on the studio shots, we already had high expectations for this important show from the young artist. Kelsey certainly delivered on all the hype with a stunning new body of work, and yes, nothing beats seeing the paintings up on the actual walls. The show is selling briskly and will be on site until December 19th, so make sure to stop by if you wander south to […]

Openings: Candice Tripp – “Tiny Drama” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Opening along side Kris Kuksi (covered) this weekend at Joshua Liner Gallery, Candice Tripp (interviewed) made her New York debut with a fabulous showing.  The large body of work was chock full of witty spins on traditional wives’ tales told in a unique point of view that only Candice can have. The pieces certainly didn’t disappoint, with the detailed work taking viewers on a “trippy” journey. Check out all the pics after the jump.

JR @ Abu Dhabi Art Fair

Looks like intrepid traveler, JR, added Abu Dhabi on the list of places he has visited with his street photography.  To coincide with the annual Abu Dhabi Art Fair, the french wheatpaster was asked to create a large scale installation for the increasingly art-infused capital of the arab emirate. Take a look at a couple more pics after the jump.

Openings: “Inside Out, Outside In” @ Museu de Arte de São Paulo

Last week, the fantastic “Inside Out, Outside In” group show at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) opened its doors showcasing work from six Brazilian street artists Titi Freak, Zezão, Stephan Doitschinoff, Ramon Martins, Carlos Dias and Daniel Melim. Luckily, our correspondent Layla K was on hand to document the exhibition curated by Choque Cultural featuring paintings, murals, and large-scale installations. More pics after the jump…

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Sloan Fine Art x Chris Berens

Chris Berens fans attending Art Basel are in for a treat his year as Sloan Fine Art will feature several pieces from him in their booth at SCOPE as a preview to his big New York show opening at their gallery on December 16th. Berens’ soft focus and imaginative work is a result of a unique and time-consuming process and are often homages to the Dutch master painters of yore. We have become increasingly enamored with his work after recent shows in Seattle and Amsterdam […]

Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Beast Anthology” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On Saturday night, AM was on hand to experience the surreal sculptures of Kris Kuksi as Joshua Liner Gallery hosted the opening of his latest show the “Beast Anthology.” As seen in our preview of the show, the show looked like a literal monster, but nothing prepared us for seeing the work in person. The physical intricacies of his craftsmanship coupled with the fantastical stories unfolding in every piece held the packed house in a unique trance that we’ve rarely experienced from an art show in New York. […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Tristram Lansdowne @ LE Gallery, Toronto

AM got hooked on Tristram Lansdowne’s urban landscape paintings when we saw his work featured earlier this year at Joshua Liner Gallery’s summer group show (covered), so we tried to find out as much as we could about this exciting young artist. Lansdowne has a solo show entitled “Entropical Paradise” opening on 27th November at Toronto’s LE Gallery. Judging from the work we’ve seen in progress here, this show looks like one to catch if you can. Based in Toronto, Tristram’s watercoloured architectural representations depict […]

Openings: Alex Lukas – “The Eventuality of Daybreak” @ Glowlab

We recently stopped by Glowlab in NYC to check out “The Eventuality of Daybreak,” the new body of work from Alex Lukas. The solo exhibition from the Philly-based artist revealed a batch of works that highlighted desolate apocalyptic landscapes of major cities which depict a possible near future where these metropolises are literally submerged through coastal flooding. Alex works with various techniques including acrylic, ink, silkscreen, gouache to get his images and points across. The work was not only intricately put together, but also reasonably priced. If you’re […]
