Openings: Jim Houser & Richard Colman @ White Walls

Jim Houser and Richard Colman’s “Awful Mountain” (previewed) opened last night at White Walls in SF. As usual, Houser’s installations complemented his paintings perfectly. If only collectors could have him go to their houses and setup the pieces they own in a similar fashion. Colman had some large pieces that were quite eyecatching.  His work has some similarities to Dalek (we hear they are long-time friends with their first show in the scene being a two-person show at Merry Karnowsky years back) but seems more […]

Preview: Greg Simkins @ Gallery 1988

On November 6th, Greg “Craola” Simkins will open the second and final part of his bi-coastal show at Gallery 1988 in LA. Entitled “It Wanders West,” it looks to be a tremendous show picking up right where “It Wanders East“ at Joshua Liner Gallery left off. Not many images have leaked yet but we have posted what we have gathered so far and there are hints of some on the in-progress video seen after the jump.  AM also has the details for the print release […]

Preview: Scott Belcastro @ Cerasoli:LeBasse

Scott Belcastro’s newest display of work will be shown on November 8th at the Cerasoli:Lebasse gallery as part of a two-person show with Nate Frizzell (previewed). He gave us a little insight on the show. “The theme of the show is based on the idea of being lost in the thicket or the forest….while searching for a home for your beliefs or feelings. I like the fact that I can bring someone into my feelings and they can look around for awhile, it’s not easy […]

Preview: Kukula @ Copro Nason

The preview images for Kukula’s show “Princess Express” (previously teased) which opens on November 8th at Copronason are now online.  You really get a feeling that her work has matured as you look through her paintings.  Her details, “story-telling,” and composition really look to have taken a step up while maintining some of the edginess from before (bleeding hearts, injured animals, scratch marks, suggestive outfits).  See for yourself after the jump.

Collecting Contemporary: Urban Art Panel @ Bonhams

On Wednesday Nov. 5th, Bonhams (Los Angeles) will be holding a very special panel to discuss the Contemporary Urban art market. This panel will include Shepard Fairey (artist), Charming Baker (artist), Jon Reis (Filmmaker), Shana Nys Dambrot (Art Critic/Editor), and Cindy Cronk (Modern Art auction house specialist). The panel will moderated by none other than Seth Carmichael of the Carmichael Gallery. The panel has been designed to incorporate not only artists, but also an art critic, film maker, auction specialist, and gallery curator/owner to facilitate a healthy dialogue. This […]

Kehinde Wiley @ Deitch Projects

Down, an exhibition of new paintings by Kehinde Wiley, opens this Saturday at Deitch Projects. The exhibition supposedly will consist of four large-scale paintings inspired by images of fallen warriors, saints and classical mythology. If you haven’t seen any of Wiley’s large works in person, you definitely need to come out for this show. You will be amazed. To see more examples of Wiley’s work, click here.

Preview: Ron English @ Shooting Gallery

With the election just a few days away, one would think that Ron English’s latest exhibition “The Secret History of KISS” would revolve around his famous Abraham Obama character, but not quite so. The master Pop Surrealist is up to his old tricks again, this flexing his other muscles as he brings back his signature “KISS” images painted flawlessly in the form of classic renaissance-esque oils. The images from this show clearly shows that Ron’s technical skills rival his stupendous imagination and wit! There will […]
