Teaser: The LOST Underground Art Project @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

Some of us at the AM office are pretty hardcore LOST fans or Losties for those who are hip to the vernacular. That’s why we are looking forward to “The LOST Underground Art Project” opening this Wednesday, December 15th, at Gallery 1988 in LA. Some of you may be aware of the LOST prints that have been released periodically through DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear over the last several months. Well, for the first time, all 16 prints (released and sold out) will be seen in one room. More […]

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Dan Attoe @ Peres Projects

Less than a month after Dan Attoe‘s highly successful solo exhibition, I’m Done Worryin’ About Shit, at Peres Projects in Los Angeles came to a close, the gallery featured the artist in a solo show at Art Basel Miami.  The show consisted of Attoe’s meticulously rendered paintings and large-scale, highly illuminated neon sculptures.  It certainly was one of the most spectacular booths at Basel’s Art Nova section. More after the jump…

Openings: Herbert Baglione – “The Dark Wave” @ FIFTY24SF

Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione opened his latest solo show, “The Dark Wave” last night at San Francisco’s FIFTY24SF gallery.  Though the artist was unable to attend, due to passport restrictions, Baglione certainly came correct with an overwhelming selection of original sketches (close to 300!) and nine medium to large sized paintings.  The sketches, which are cash-and-carry till Christmas, have been taken out of Herbert’s personal sketchbooks and provide an insightful look at the processes and growth of this important Brazilian artist. More pictures after the […]

Preview: James Marshall – “And There Was War in Heaven” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening tomorrow night at Jonathan LeVine Gallery is James Marshall’s (interviewed) latest show entitled “And There Was War in Heaven.” With this new body of work, the artist formerly known as Dalek continues down the path of near-total geometric abstraction, with few or no references remaining to his early space monkey character. In addition, Marshall has created several paintings with a more simplified style and a very recession-friendly pricing, which will no doubt interest old and new Dalek collectors alike. See the rest of the […]

Releases: Josh Keyes Book – “Sprout Catalog”

If you’re like us at AM, you can’t wait until Josh Keyes’ (interviewed) show  at Jonathan Levine Gallery (previewed). But to keep his eager fans happy in the meantime, David B. Smith Gallery will be releasing a hardback book next Tuesday cataloging his recent “Sprout” show (covered) and related pieces. We got an in depth look at this book at the DBS’ SCOPE booth and we must say that this book is not only gorgeous, but also features several multi-page layouts of some of Keyes’ best works to […]

Whitney Announces 2010 Biennial Picks

It’s that time of year again, when the Whitney makes an important announcement regarding the Whitney Biennial.  Last year at the exact same time, it announced the curatorial team for its 2010 Biennial.  Today, the much-anticipated list of artists, which includes Robert Williams, Aurel Schmidt, and Tauba Auerbach, was announced.  Curators Francesco Bonami and Gary Carrion-Murayari chose a diverse range of artists who work across all different kinds of media and subject matter.  Eleven artists make their return from previous Biennials.  In what could further […]

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Dana Schutz @ Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL)

With the demand for quality evident by the current buyer’s market in contemporary art, Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL) brought out their best artist, the painter Dana Schutz, for Art Basel Miami 2009.  The gallery’s booth consisted of new paintings by Schutz and a film and sculpture from Nathalie Djurberg.  Schutz is considered one of today’s best young painters and frequently appears on many critics and collectors best-of lists, as well as part of major museum collections.  Her last solo show at the gallery, Missing Pictures, […]

Openings: Sashie Masakatsu – “De Facto Standard” @ Mizuma Gallery

Mizuma Gallery recently hosted the opening of Masakatsu Sashie’s latest body of work “De Facto Standard.” As mentioned in our preview, Sashie isn’t just content with his success using his spherical motifs. He seeks to redefine the mold of success with larger canvas sizes and unique “shapes” we have not yet seen from the young artist. From ginormous wall size canvases to a few select smaller pieces sporting some unseen before designs, Sashie is definitely going for the “less is more” approach with only six high quality paintings […]

Preview: Andy Kehoe – “The World Unseen and Those In Between” @ Thinkspace

As the last part of fall gives way to winter, Andy Kehoe gets set to open his show “The World Unseen and Those In Between” at Thinkspace Gallery. How appropriate – as Kehoe’s paintings have become synonymous with the autumn spirit, at least in our minds. His palette includes oranges, browns, and yellows with imagery including leaves, trees, and foliage of the season, as well as the strange creatures that inhabit his world. He opens along side Dabs Myla’s “Earthquake Weather” and Jesse Hotchkiss’ “Learning […]
