Walrus TV: D*Face Interview

Walrus TV has released another excellent video recently.  This time, they feature a revealing interview with D*Face, where he talks about how it all started for him.  Haven’t seen a large body of work from him in a while since his Black Rat Press show and Hong Kong show last year, so this video will have to tide you over until his next solo in September at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Discuss D*Face here.

Looks like Sylvia Ji (interviewed) is in the midst of preparing for her first solo show in the UK entitled “Nectar” set to open on September 3rd at StolenSpace.  She posted up a shot of her studio with some in progress works recently on her blog, where she also revealed a print set project she’s been working on. FAME Festival: Blu & David Ellis

The great Italian street artist Blu has finally made his mark at FAME Fest (see AM’s coverage here). Few possess the faculty or ingenuity to manipulate their surroundings quite like him to create a work of art. The piece above was created both for the festival and for an animated film that Blu and David Ellis are currently working on. We love the films these artists have created in the past and are very excited to see their collaborative effort. See images of David Ellis’ work in […]

Interviews: Michael Page – “ThankYouGoodbye” @ Varnish Fine Arts

Michael Page’s newest show, “ThankYouGoodbye” (teased), features a body of work inspired by climate change in places like Greenland and Alaska. Sadly, his show that opened at Varnish Fine Art in SF over the weekend will be the last in this space for the gallery. We had a chance to sit down for an interview with Page to talk about the new direction his work is going among other things. Interview after the jump…

Openings: “Willoughby Windows” presented by Ad Hoc Art

Bringing life to a row of twelve empty storefronts in New York, the “Willoughby Windows” (previewed) community beautification project presented by Ad Hoc Art in conjunction with the MetroTech Business Improvement District, was a success by all accounts. The storefronts, located at 89 to 106 Willoughby Street in Brooklyn, included participation from artists Chris Stain, Ellis G. (interviewed), Gaia, Logan Hicks (interviewed), Dennis McNett, Michael De Feo, Josh MacPhee and more. Given the number of rising empty storefronts due to the state of the economy, hopefully we’ll see more such projects take place in […]

Video: Ryan McGinness @ VA Museum of Fine Arts

Richmond’s Virgina Museum of Fine Arts is currently undergoing an expansion, scheduled to be completed by May 1, 2010. As part of that transformation, the VMFA has asked AM favorite Ryan McGinness (who last showed at Deitch) to create a large-scale, site-specific artwork based on the museum’s collection to greet visitors upon entering the museum.  Watch the above video to see a hard-hatted McGinness visit his work’s future home and discuss the ambitious project with VMFA curator John Ravenal.

Streets: Mark Jenkins

Mark Jenkins has sent us images of his new work from the BELEF Festival in Belgrade. The annual summer arts event, which focuses on the power of contemporary art, theatre and music in public space, aims to counter the closing down of local museums and dwindling attendance at gallery shows, and promote the European city’s potential as a cultural metropolis. Openings: Munky Bidness – San Diego Comic-Con 2009

This year’s Comic-Con saw no shortage of art-related events and after hitting up the screening of Scribble.08, AM made its way over to “Munky Bidness” put on by Munky King and Hi-Fructose. The focus of the party was a live-painting exhibition by Buff Monster and Food One, who utilized the supple bodies of some female participants as their canvases, while Attaboy, Carlos Ramos and Chris Ryniak opted for the more traditional wood surface. Streets: BAST

Although BAST seems to be experimenting with a new technique for some pieces in “Beach Blanket Bingo” summer group show at Jonathan Levine Gallery (pics coming soon), nothing reminds us more of his genius then seeing some classic pieces in the streets.  Looks like he’s in another group show in Paris next month, but for now, take a look at some of these photos that Sabeth718 took around Brooklyn of some new pasteups including the one above with the perfect placement.
