Ron English x Bigfoot x Jason Maloney Mural in Jersey City

Yesterday afternoon, one of our favorite contemporary pop artists, Ron English, along with west coast artists Bigfoot and Jason Maloney, injected a little extra life into downtown Jersey City. They blessed Hudson County Art Supply’s exterior wall in Jersey City, NJ with a huge, colorful, and collaborative mural.   It was a gorgeous day for painting. Even Jersey City Mayor, Jeremiah Healey showed up unexpectedly to show his appreciation and support for the project. Everyone was in good spirits and there were aerosol cans everywhere. […]

Preview: David Choe – “Death Blossom” @ Pyo Gallery (Beijing)

Apparently, David Choe has been in China working hard on his next series of shows with Pyo Gallery in Beijing.  Opening simultaneously on April 4th at several locations including the Chao Yan Liquor Gallery & 798 Gallery, his solo exhibit will be entitled “Death Blossom.”  Take a look at some of the completed and in-progress paintings after the jump. Also, take time to read the entertaining interview Choe did with our friends over on the Obama Art Report.

Openings: Ana Bagayan @ Billy Shire

Ana Bagayan presented new work at Billy Shire this past Saturday, March 14th. AM met up with Ana during the first hour of the opening reception. She took us through and showed us her new pieces, which include 9 paintings, 10 drawings and a numbered edition print. When we saw Ana, she was holding a small stack of prints (pictured at the end of the photo gallery below). These prints turned out to be gifts that she would hand out to the first 30 people […]

Releases: Faile Relaunches Website with Originals & Prints

One would think that the Faile collective would take a little time off after their bangin’ “Lost in Glimmering Shadows” show last year in the UK (covered), but 2009 is no off-year for them. First, they went on a “Supreme: Urban Beautification” campaign on the streets of Manhattan (reported), and now they have relaunched their website: Faile.net with some fresh designs and some even fresher original works & prints which will be sold exclusively through their online shop. To make things as fair as possible for […]

Preview/Interviews: Luke Chueh – “From Light Cometh Darkness” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Luke Chueh’s show “From Light Cometh Darkness” opens this Friday, March 20th at Corey Helford Gallery. Although this body of work encompasses his usual beloved but sad and/or tortured characters, Chueh does appear to be exploring some different techniques and themes. For example, look at the raw energy and loose strokes in his interpretation of Goya’s famous painting (seen above).  We sat down with Luke to talk about about this painting as well as other things in the interview after the jump…

Getty to Slash Budget as Trust has Lost $2 Billion in Last Year

The Getty Center (where we will be visiting for Kehinde Wiley’s talk) will surely be slashing their budget soon as news has come out that the J. Paul Getty Trust has lost amost $2 billion over the last year. We are sure other institutions don’t feel too badly for them yet as their trust is still the behemoth in the museum world at $4.5 billion. The closest endowment to the Getty’s is that of the Met (NY) at $2.1 billion, which announced plans Thursday to […]

Takashi Murakami’s Geisai 12 Art Fair

AM was excited to have been in attendance for the 12th installment of Takashi Murakami’s self-represented artist art fair, Geisai, held in Tokyo, Sunday March 8. It was quite an experience, with hundreds of young and emerging artists presenting their own paintings, drawings, sculptures or performance art together for one whirlwind day. Plus, there were various live musical and dance performances. Since there was so much going on and our Japanese isn’t that great, we weren’t always sure what was happening, but we took lots […]

Just wanted to update the readers of AM on the video projects we are working on with Jeremy Lynch and the guys at Analog Color.  First on the schedule today, was wrapping up the mini-documentary featuring Jeff Soto and his Riverside Art Museum show.  We were able to spend some time interviewing Jeff as well as catch some shots of the beautiful IE. Next up on the Sunday’s busy schedule, was to begin filming a session at Todd Schorr’s studio as we will be working […]

Armory Focus: Opus Art @ Bridge Art Fair

During Armory Week, there were a few things that caught our attention. One of the highlights of the Bridge Art Fair was British gallery Opus Art who traveled from the UK to show New York just what they have to offer. Opus brings a hip mix of Contemporary and Urban artists that included: Chris Kettle, Peter Blake, SHEONE, Justine Smith, Lex Thomas, Dave White, Hush, Bai Tao and Johan Andersson. AM spent some time gazing at the diverse range of great works showcased at their booth. We got […]
