With the official opening of Armory Week in New York tomorrow, March 3rd, it’s time to tell you about one of the booths we are really looking forward to. One of the satellite fairs we make a point to catch during Armory Week is Scope. Hosting a variety of genres, the event featured a diverse mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with here on AM. Frieze Week NYC ’13: Frieze Art Fair – First Look

Frieze returned to New York City this weekend, and again put on an top-notch art fair that challenges the dominance of The Armory Show. Like last year, the event was held on scenic Randall’s Island and featured many of the world’s most respected galleries and artists. We visited the fair multiple times over the weekend, and will post about specific booths that caught our eye. But first, here’s a general overview of some of what we enjoyed from Frieze NYC 2013.

Armory Week ’12: Scope Art Fair

One of the mainstay satellite fairs during Armory Week is the Scope Art Fair. This year’s edition rocked a new location just blocks from the main Armory Art Show (here & here) and gained some fresh galleries go along with its revamped look. As with most fairs we caught works by artists from around the globe and we also ran into a few familiar faces to go along with the infusion of new blood. Check it out after the jump.

Armory Week ’12: ADAA Art Show – First Look

The Armory Art Show (here & here) may be the flagship event of Armory Week in New York, but the most prestigious title this year goes to another. The ADAA Art Show held at the Park Avenue Armory (covered) was a smaller, but more selective fair. Like a small jewelery box, this event drew some of the top galleries from around the nation. Armory Week ’12: Volta Show – First Look

Continuing our Armory Week coverage we move on to Volta. This fair is the little brother to the main Armory Art Show (here & here). For Volta, selected galleries don’t exhibit various artists from their roster, instead they focus on one artist to showcase at their booth. This rule kept our head spinning to a minimum, but nonetheless the visual talent had our eyes dancing around the whole time. Check it out after the jump.

Armory Week ’11 – Christina Ray @ Pulse NY

One of the booths we really enjoyed at this year’s Pulse fair was that of Christina Ray, who presented a solo exhibition by artist Beka Goedde. Goedde’s work is very much based in printmaking, using such techniques as etching and Chine-collé (the application of thin colored paper as color) to create unique mixed media pieces that sometimes resemble simple collage and other times look more like complex abstract paintings. Armory Week ’11 – KAWS @ Honor Fraser

Tondo… That was the word of the week that Honor Fraser taught us about their Armory booth featuring Kaws. Tondo is the term for the round canvases which dazzled passerby’s at the blue chip art fair. At the center of the showcase, an impressive “Tondo Wall” was created using 21 round canvases. Each piece featured a different expression set in a distinct minimalist fashion and together the installation worked to convey a possible sequence or gamut of emotion.
