Basel Week Switzerland ’15: VOLTA

After bringing you a look at SCOPE Basel, we now turn our attention to the VOLTA. Moving back to the center of the city at the venue Markthalle, their 11th year at Basel Week Switzerland sees the art fair continuing to focus on mainly solo exhibitions from artists at their gallery booths like Mark Stone for The Hole Gallery (seen above). Previews: Bumblebeelovesyou – “#WhereWeBeelong” @ Thinkspace

Opening on Saturday night (June 20th) in the Thinkspace Gallery project room is #WhereWeBeelong, a new show from Bumblebeelovesyou. The works for the exhibitioni mirror the Los Angeles-based street artist’s outdoor imagery – whimsical scenes of children at play, of course oftentimes dressed in yellow and black or peppered with references to his namesake. Earlier this week, we stopped by the Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) to bring you a look at the epic show taking form that is being put on as a collaboration between the LBMA, Thinkspace Gallery, and the people behind POW! WOW!. Starting Monday, June 22nd, POW! WOW! Long Beach will also be getting started with artists Aaron De La Cruz, Benjie Escobar, Cryptik, Fafi, Hueman, James Jean, Jeff McMillan, Jeff Soto, Low Bros, Madsteez, Nychos, Push, and Tristan Eaton in town to beautify the urban landscape. Mehdi Ghadyanloo was in recently in UK again, painting a new mural in Dulwich. This wall was an extension of his previous project with Dulwich Picture Gallery, where artists are invited to reinterpret classic master paintings from their permanent collection. On this occasion, the Iranian artist picked David the younger Teniers’ A Castle and its Proprietors oil piece from 17th century (shown bellow), and used its elements in his mural. With the art world focused in on the festivities in Switzerland, we start our coverage of Art Basel Week with a feature on SCOPE. Celebrating nine years in Basel, the fair returns to its pioneering location at Basel’s New Art District on the Rhine. Recap: artBGC ONE (Manila)

Last week, we shared with you some of the works Nate Frizzell (interviewed) created for the artBGC ONE Festival in the Philippines. We now have a recap of the other murals that were created by international artists like FAILE, Cyrcle., AkaCORLEONE, Kristin Farr, Drew Merritt and Filipino artists Egg Fiasco and Anjo Bolarda for the inaugural event curated by LeBasse Projects, and held in conjunction with the Bonifacio Arts Foundation (BAFI) in Manila. While prepping for his solo (more on this later) opening at KP Projects / MKG later this month, Jeff Soto (interviewed) recently found time to paint a mural just down the street from the Los Angeles showspace. Featuring one of his signature owls, the piece located on La Brea and West 1st Street will greet attendees when the show opens on June 26th. On May 30th, Museu do Côa in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Portugal, opened 1/81, a group show presenting the newest works of some of Portugal’s contemporary and urban artists. Recap: Gary Baseman – “Happy Toby To You” @ Time Square Hong Kong

Continuing to spread his pervasive imagery to Asia (also see Shanghai & Taipei), Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) recent project saw him celebrating his iconic Toby character’s 10th birthday in Hong Kong. Held at the busy Time Square complex in Causeway Bay, the installation (arranged by LeBasse Projects) featured a dinner party for his faithful companion as well as photo exhibition of their travels together. Following her success in Paris and Shangai, French gallerist Magda Danysz recently launched a pop-up gallery space in London called the The London Project for a duration of 100 days.
