Upcoming: Eloy Morales – “About Head” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On May 16th, the 529 West 20th Street location of Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be hosting a set of new works from Eloy Morales collectively entitled About Head. The Madrid-based artist’s raw hyper-realistic portraiture is a sight to behold, but even more so in person when the scale is fully appreciated. Upcoming: Gary Baseman – “Happy Toby To You” @ Time Square Hong Kong

On May 21st, Hong Kong’s Time Square will be welcoming in another artist (see Mike Stilkey and Yoskay Yamamoto) to create an installation arranged by LeBasse Projects at the mall complex in Causeway Bay. In celebration of his character Toby’s 10th birthday, Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) faithful companion will be part of a new sculptural installation set up as a birthday party with his dear friends. Videos: Vhils – “Incision”

Last year, we brought you images from Vhils’ (filmed) show in Brazil where portraits of the country’s indigenous Araçaí community were carved the doors of their homes and put on display at at Caixa Cultural. Nowness released a video a couple days ago from the Portuguese street artist that looks into the project a little deeper and hopes to draw attention to the plight of the 90 Guaraní people were moved by the government at the turn of this century, displacing them from their ancestral homes. Streets: Nychos (Vienna)

Last month, prolific street muralist Nychos painted a mural in his Vienna entitled Dissection of a Polar Bear. Over five stories high, the wall painted is the first large scale piece the Austrian artist has worked on in his hometown and coincides with creative studio, Rabbit Eye Movement, which just celebrated their 10 year anniversary. KAWS Designs Trophy For SpongeBob SquarePants 400 Nascar Race

Continuing to raise his profile and to familiarize the general public with his signature imagery, KAWS has teamed up with NASCAR to design the trophy for the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 coming up at the Kansas Speedway on May 9th (although it might be delayed due to the weather). Previews: Travis Louie – “Archive of Lost Species” @ Roq La Rue

Tonight in Seattle (May 7th), Travis Louie (interviewed) will be revisiting Roq La Rue for another showing of his vintage photography inspired paintings of imaginary creatures, created in a style self-described as a kind of “cryptozoology.” Entitled Archive of Lost Species, the fresh new pieces are a collection of fantastical characters, unique in their size and circumstance, many posing next to their human counterparts.
