Previews: Lola – “The Younger” @ 80 Forty Gallery

This Saturday night (December 13th) in Los Angeles at 80 Forty Gallery, Lola will be opening the first solo we have seen from her since 2012 (covered). The new body of work entitled The Younger sounds to be deeply personal for the artist as it explores her childhood memories and documents her mental, physical, and spiritual journey through art and life. Fans will be interested to know that she has added oil painting to her repertoire and also housed each piece in antique, vintage, or hand built […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: Faith47 x Alexis Diaz

Another wall that caught our eyes while around Wynwood Walls during Basel Week Miami was a joint effort from Faith47 and Alexis Diaz, a continuation of the The Art of Collaboration program this year (also see Shep x Cleon Peterson). The mural was stunning in person, mixing South Africa-based Faith47’s female portraiture entwined with the darker illustrative style of the Puerto Rican Diaz. Here are some shots of him putting the finishing touches on the piece as well as a look at the entire image. Full image of the wall via […]

The title is 344, and is one of the butterflies he introduced at his recent London solo at Lazarides (covered). With the title of the recent show, Chaos Theory, in mind, referring to the global situation and human influence on nature & environment, the French artist picked an image representing the butterfly effect. Using his signature black and […]

So, while most of art world was focused to Miami, we visited her studio, saw some of the large works she is working on, witnessed how much patience and passion […]

Streets: Daan Botlek (India)

Daan Botlek recently spent few weeks in India, traveling and painting. During his stay in Mumbai, he took part in the local St+Art India Festival and created this effective piece on a local elementary school. As usual in his work, he worked in the architectural elements of the building, making the mural blend with the space. Using a limited color palette, and several very effective depth perception tricks, he painted this unique piece – Continental Drift. The title comes from a local passerby who commented that the image reminds him of […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Aqua

Another fair we visited while in Miami was the tenth edition of Aqua. Featuring emerging and mid-career artists, the unique setting was a classic South Beach hotel that opened its rooms to collectors and exhibitors for the duration of Basel Week Miami. One of the pleasant surprises we stumbled upon was the piece seen above from Travis Louie (interviewed) that sees him using color for the first time in his signature series of works (exhibited by William Baczek). See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss […]

Openings: Kai & Sunny – “Lots of Bits of Star” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

British artistic duo Kai and Sunny, who we have been long time followers, recently opened a new solo exhibition in New York at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Lots of Bits of Stars includes carvings, letterpress prints and ink works on paper. The duo also created an original collaboration with Shepard Fairey. Depicting geometric patterns of flora and fauna, the works in the show revolve around contradicting perceptions of the natural world, balancing the serene with the fierce, the fragile with the stable, and the vulnerable with the assertive. The creative […]
