We last caught up with Mel Kadel back in 2012 when she presented a solo show at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. During January, our friends at Very Near Almost (VNA) invited us to come along on a visit to Swoon (interviewed) Brooklyn studio while they conducted an intimate photo shoot for their 25th issue. Recently, we received final photos & video footage of an independent project that took place in Wynwood, Miami, during Art Basel Week last year. Initiated by the artists 2501 and Pastel, the Mirrorless project involves three crucial subjects – artist, home and people, that are actually the key elements of works through their interaction with the elements of the installation. Elusive British artist Banksy is back in the spotlight again with another worthy cause. After recently donating the original Heart Balloon for charity, and raising $650,000 for Haiti (covered), Bristol’s most popular man of mystery is at it again by contributing to #WithSyria project. One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on. Ian Strage aka Kid Zoom recently introduced his latest installation, Landed, for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. With its focus on architecture, this large, site-specific sculptural work follows his solo exhibitions last year at the National Gallery of Victoria (covered), and at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch (covered). Over the weekend, AM stopped by Blum & Poe in Culver City to check out the new expansive exhibition from Yoshitomo Nara. The solo is the Japanese artist’s seventh with the gallery and includes a selection of new paintings, a series of large-scale bronze sculptures, and a survey in the upstairs space of drawings made over the last thirty years displayed in a chronological order. Faith47 recently took part in the #ANOTHERLIGHTUP project in Capetown, whose goal is to “fund the installation of a street light system into one of Cape Town’s more dangerous neighbourhoods and empower individuals with the potential to be active agents in change.” The Capetown-based artist contributed a new mural & installation entitled Harvest.
