Alexandre Farto aka Vhils was one of the most anticipated names for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii festival. Both visitors and participating artists were looking forward to seeing the Portuguese artist in action, which kept being postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Dynamic art duo Cyrcle. (featured) was one of the last ones to finish their mural for POW! WOW! Hawaii festival due to their busy schedule. They had just barely enough time to pull this massive masterpiece off, but with their well-coordinated team work, they made it happen over two nights & days of painting. Gallery B15 in Copenhagen, Denmark, will open a solo show by Italian artist, Marco Mazzoni, on the 27th of February. This will be his second show with the gallery which was the first one to host his first solo exhibit outside Italy back in 2011. Last month, AM paid a visit to the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea to enjoy new works from Tomoo Gokita. Working exclusively in shades of black and white for this exhibition, the Japanese painter has created a series of textured portraits that pay homage to the “dated archetypes lifted of pulp fiction, Hollywood rags, and film noir” with names like Showgirl, Geisha Girl, A Bathing Beauty, Cocktail Pianist from Acapulco, Daughter of a Fraudster, and A Female Spy. Dave Kinsey (featured) was one of the names we were looking forward to seeing in this year’s edition of the massive POW! WOW! Hawaii festival. Even though he arrived a few days later than planned and the tropical weather wasn’t on his side, he managed to finish this huge mural after two long days of painting. Openings: Joao Ruas – “VERSO” @ Thinkspace

Showing through this weekend at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City is VERSO, a new solo show from Joao Ruas. The Brazilian artist presented a diverse set of works including his largest work to date (seen above), a wall mural & installation, etchings, polaroids, backlit pieces, and more utilizing mediums such as acrylic, watercolor, pen, pencil, and gouache. After long days of working under hot Hawaiian sun, another participating artist the of POW! WOW! Hawaii festival, Inti, recently finished his mural. This Saturday, February 22nd, Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be hosting the opening of Kevin Cyr’s (interviewed) newest solo exhibition. Returning to the Chelsea showspace after a successful effort there back in 2012 (covered), the New York-based painter will be presenting more of his signature portraits of vandalized vehicles, this time inspired by his time on the streets of Berlin, Brussels and Paris. Australian graffiti couple, Dabs Myla, teamed up with their New Zealand friend, Misery, for a big mural collaboration at POW! WOW! Hawaii this year. With all the artists usually painting cheerful characters and cartoonish designs, this joint effort resulted in an explosion of cuteness in Kaka’ako, an industrial neighbourhood of Honolulu.
