Previews: John Brosio – “Recent Paintings” @ Arcadia Contemporary

Tomorrow night (September 15th) in Los Angeles, Arcadia Contemporary will be presenting some recent paintings from John Brosio. The new body of work includes many of the locally-based artist’s suburban landscapes, tinged with surreal features in the background like dinosaurs, natural disasters, and the monsters – with unsuspecting people in the foreground going about their daily life. Brosio also intriguing injects some two dimensional elements into his imagery, such as trees that look like flat props or creatures that are nothing more than childlike drawings. Discuss John […]

Studio Visits / Interviews: Rowdy

Rowdy is perhaps best known for his crocodiles, which stalk the urban landscape with a quiet menace, and his cast of other characters which abound with abrasive energy. But the Bristol-based artist’s abstract landscapes, which can be read as both highly political but also deeply personal, represent a far more reflective and contemplative side to his work. An entire building is depicted by an individual mark such as the smudge of a fingerprint, the stroke of a paintbrush or the squirt from a spray-can and […]

Openings: Soey Milk – “INFLORESCENCE” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Over the weekend, Soey Milk premiered Inflorescence, her second solo show (see 2015) to date with Corey Helford Gallery. The collection of over 20 paintings and drawings highlighted significant moments in Milk’s life. Those who attended the premiere may have felt a sense of familiarity with some of the crowd. This should not come as a surprise as the new body of work included portraits of many of her friends as well as herself. During a recent interview, she further explained – “If I’m working […]

Recap: YESNIK x Jaybo – “For Better or Worse” @ (LA Popup)

Last weekend, YESNIK and Jaybo presented some new works for fans in Los Angeles with a surprisingly cohesive three day pop up show. Presented by F-U (For the Unconventional), For Better or Worse featured totemic nature-inspired works from the San Diego-based YESNIK that had a collage-like feel to the balanced compositions alongside Berlin-based Jaybo Monk’s portrait mashups which were described as “a fractured vision of contemporary society.” Both artists contributed sculptural pieces to exhibition – an eclectic selection of assemblages from Jaybo and some large-scale three dimensional representations of YESNIK’s imagery […]

This Thursday (September 13th), Conor Harrington (interviewed) will be opening a solo show in London entitled The Story of Us and Them. Consisting of 12 new works, the exhibition to be hosted by HENI Gallery sees the Irish artist explore the fine line between tribalism and patriotism. […]

This Saturday night (September 15th), Cinta Vidal will be presenting her new solo show at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Viewpoints, the exhibition features the Barcelona-based artist’s wonderful gravity-defying and Escher-esque imagery. Spanning complex architectural compositions, the natural world, as well as clusters of people, pets, and furniture, Vidal’s imaginative paintings draw the eye in. The viewer begins to trace the different perspectives that are interconnected in each piece, trying they hardest to resist turning their heads sideways or upside down to match each vantage point. […]

Opening: Tomoo Gokita @ Blum & Poe

Over the weekend, Tomoo Gokita took a step forward to the next stage of his career with his first showing at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles. Created entirely on square canvases, the new body of work continues the Japanese artist’s practice of working in monochrome, creating portraits that take their cue from pop culture or art history. As we have come to expect, Gokita masterfully renders his subjects with varying shades of black, white, and gray, in an alternatively realistic and abstract technique, oftentimes with the faces […]

Streets: Nuart 2018 (Part II)

The past weekend marked the opening of the 18th edition of the world-renowned Nuart Festival and once again, AM was there to witness all of it. Different in quite a few aspects than in previous years, the 2018 edition produced a whole new body of new public interventions ranging in size, placement, and medium, while adding to Stavanger’s exceptional street art collection. Due to unfortunate funding cuts this year, festival organizers were forced to slightly change their concept. “It has helped us to re-focus on who we are and what we’re […]
