Video / Streets: Viva La Revolucion Final Roundup

For those of you who have been following out coverage of the Viva La Revolucion exhibition, we have for you a final roundup of the work put up around San Diego by the participating artists. We start you off with completed pics of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) Burmese Monk mural in South Park. The large mural was even more impressive when you consider that it was all painted/stenciled as opposed to the usual wheatpaste. More images of this piece and others after the jump as well […]

Openings: “Viva La Revolucion” @ Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

Saturday evening in San Diego was a great night for street, urban, and new contemporary art. With many of the museums in so-called cultural centers of this country and world still slow to embrace a rapidly growing movement, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego made it clear where they stand with an amazing exhibition of some of the major players in this art “Revolucion”. Not only did the city open up their public spaces to the artists (albeit still with some naysayers), they also […]

Preview: Viva La Revolucion @ MCASD

AM headed down to San Diego on Friday morning to catch the press preview of Viva La Revolucion at MCASD (check out our street coverage here). It was great to wander around the Jacobs Building and get a sneak peek of everything the artists have been working on indoors after seeing all the amazing pieces that have been popping up on the streets of the city. Pedro Alonzo, the exhibition’s curator, led a talk around the museum and spoke about the different artists and their work. Shepard Fairey, David Ellis, Stephan […]

Video: Bender from Futurama as Invader

Just like the previous intersections of popular animated series and our art world (see Souther Salazar x Family Guy, Shepard Fairey x Family Guy, Shepard Fairey x South Park,  and Ron English x Simpsons), Futurama has now upped the ante with a clip of Bender running around putting up “street art” stylized after the tile work of Invader. Via Mike Maxwell. Discuss Invader here.

Openings: Jonathan Yeo – “Porn in the USA” @ Lazarides (Bevery Hills)

The lights were dimmed, the walls were painted black, and the spotlights were perfectly positioned.  It was a appropriately romantic mood for some naughty pictures, courtesy of Jonathan Yeo and Lazarides, Beverly Hills. The 8,000 square foot temporary gallery hosted its 3rd show, one that was a totally unique experience from the previous two. While David Choe, JR, Conor Harrington and crew brought the urban streets inside, Yeo brought the high class brothel co-inhabited by world famous celebrities and nude beauties into the cavernous Beverly […]

Openings: StolenSpace Summer Group Show

AM got to the opening of StolenSpace’s annual Summer Group Show last week to find a line of people queuing out of the door! A packed house came out to see what we found to be a very strong grouping of work from an interesting mix of artists, some old StolenSpace favorites, but a lot fresh names – some new to the gallery, and some new to the London scene. Chloe Early is one of our favorite painters from the StolenSpace roster, and her new […]
