Sadly, word has come of the passing yesterday of Maurice Sendak, one of the most important children’s book artists of the 20th century. He is known in particular for Where the Wild Things Are, which has sold over 19 million copies worldwide and has been the subject of many adaptations, including a live-action 2009 feature-film directed by Spike Jonze. For fans of the recent more monochromatic aspects of Mars-1′s (featured) oeuvre, this new mural he painted in San Francisco should get them going. The otherworldly and organic nature of his work has become recognizable as part of the local painter’s signature imagery with certain pieces executed in a more minimalistic fashion – like the one seen here but on a much larger scale.
