Openings: Skullphone – “Digital Media” @ Subliminal Projects

This past Saturday, AM saw the return of Skullphone to his home of Los Angeles. The show “Digital Media” takes a closer look and questions the viewer about their relationship with technology. Skullphone always has packed opening, but this was one of the few where you had to line up and wait for the “one in one out” if you didn’t get there early. The pieces on display were visually stimulating and utilized Skullphone’s signature dot technique with pieces that were hand-composed with enamel and […]

Teaser: Todd Schorr – “Designed for Extinction” @ Otis College of Art and Design

AM had the pleasure to visit with Todd Schorr (interviewed) last week in his studio as he was putting on the finishing touches for his upcoming show at Otis College of Art and Design at the end of this month (June 26th). The exhibition entitled “Designed for Extinction” will be similar to his highly successful show last year at the San Jose Museum of Art (covered) in the sense that it will be a retrospective. However, this time around, the works included will span the […]

According to our friends at Galerie Springmann.Varol, the street art tandem of Hera and Akut are already on site setting up their new show opening June 11th. Not only will the exhibition feature fantastic paintings from  Herakut (interviewed), it looks as though there will be some exquisite sculptural work as well, bringing to life the creatures and imagery from their canvases. More pics after the jump…

Giveaway: “Beyond the Street: The 100 Most Important Figures in Urban Art” (Part II)

Based on the successful turnouts at both the London’s Phillips de Pury and New York’s Deitch Projects release parties the past few weeks, it’s safe to say that Gestalten’s “Beyond the Street: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art” by Patrick Nguyen and Stuart Mackenzie was very well received. Now we’re sure some of those that have picked up the book may have wondered why a few urban art cornerstone’s were not included? But after talking with one of the book’s Authors, some obvious artists (Ahem… Banksy, Barry McGee, and a few […]

Openings: LeBasse Projects (Culver City Artwalk)

The first stop of the Culver City Artwalk for AM was the group show at LeBasse Projects. Along with a strong lineup of gallery regulars, artists new to us such as Jean-Pierre Roy were featured during this annual event. His colorful paintings of imaginary landscapes drew us in with their dream-like vibrancy and fancy. More pics after the jump…

Preview: “The Next Generation” Group Show @ London Miles Gallery

The largely USA based new contemporary art movement continues it’s assault on the UK next week with “The Next Generation” opening Friday June 11th at London Miles Gallery. Curated by Culver City’s Thinkspace Gallery director, Andrew Hosner, the exhibition promises new work from 45 artists, all presented in a common format of 12 square inches. Continuing the charge recently begun with “Art from the New World” in Bristol, this time the art comes to heart of the action in London itself. For many of the […]

Openings: Greg Simkins – “Inside the Outside” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This past weekend, AM attended the opening of Greg “Craola” Simkins‘ (featured) newest show “Inside the Outside” at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. Our anticipation has been building ever since we brought you a preview from Greg’s Los Angeles based studio. At that time, only part of this body of work was complete and apparently it was only the tip of the iceberg. Ever the diligent perfectionist, Greg works to push his technical skills a little bit further each time we see his work. As we […]

Streets: Vhils & JR in Los Angeles (Part II)

As you know, AM has been looking forward to seeing four great artists (Vhils, JR, Conor Harrington (interviewed), Micallef (interviewed) get together for a show at the Lazarides space in Beverly Hills (320 North Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210). “Eurotrash” opens on Wednesday, but JR and Vhils have already completed some murals downtown LA (Spring Street between 6th and 7th) for their fans to enjoy. Of particular interest is the collaboration piece between the two artists where Vhils goes over a photographic wheatpaste piece […]

Fame Fest ’10: Blu

Looks like Italian street sensation Blu has arrived in Grottaglia for this year’s Fame Festival. Like last year, the artist decided to take aim at some local political issues with this large mural. One of the issues of contention with residents of the small town are the special waste dumps that are being built there without their input or permission. This piece cleverly inserts some local imagery with the olive trees that are prevalent in the area and the signature ceramic dishes that are produced […]
