Swoon & Matt Small in Zambia

Recently Swoon (interviewed), Matt Small (interviewed), Mike Snelle from Black Rat Press (interviewed), and RJ Rushmore (from Vandalog) traveled to Zambia to work with students at the Robert Shitima School. The school allows orphans and children from nearby shantytowns to get free K-9 schooling. With the help of Zamcog, they were able to give art workshops on activities such as printmaking with lino-blocks, portrait painting, and collage to 200+ students. More pics they sent us and Mike Snelle’s thoughts on the trip after the jump…

We expect some large installs in the Big Apple as the Belgium-based artist likes to go big whether inside or outside of the gallery. It’s been a while since we posted the teaser for the “Tiger Tiger Burning Bright” group show at Roq La Rue Gallery, but now’s the time to reveal more of the paintings as the opening is this Friday, May 14th. AM attended the opening of Shawn Barber’s (featured) solo show – “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle” at Joshua Liner Gallery a couple weeks ago. The ever-talented tattoo master created a new series of works based on various on the tattooing paraphernalia and portraiture of his friends. The intense paintings looked radiant in our interview with Shawn and in person, and they seem to jump out at the viewers. As we touched on briefly in our Overtime (our weekly summary of art news that doesn’t make it as full articles) last week, a rare retrospective has been organized for the late Jean-Michel Basquiat at Fondation Beyeler in Switzerland for what would have been his 50th birthday. Teaser: Pedro Matos – “Reality Show” @ Montana Shop & Gallery

Portuguese artist, Pedro Matos aka DRONE, will be opening a new exhibition in June at the Montana Shop & Gallery in Lisbon. Mixing his figurative painting skills with urban sensibility, the young and self-trained artist works on capturing the “fading” and slowly “disappearing” under-privileged in our society, often placing his gritty work on the streets. Book Launch: Beyond the Street @ Phillips de Pury, London

The London book launch for Gestalten’s “Beyond the Street: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art” took place on Friday last week at Phillips de Pury’s Victoria headquarters to a healthy crowd and with a celebratory vibe. Many of the book’s contributors joined the editors of the book, Patrick Nguyen and Stuart Mackenzie, to toast the success of just how well this mammoth publication turned out.
