After sharing some in-progress shots of the murals going up at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts in association with the Samurai! show (co-curated by Eric Nakamura, editor and founder of Giant Robot Magazine), we now have a look at the finished walls. Audrey Kawasaki took the high road painting one of her beauties on the second floor balcony of the Lancaster Lobby while Mari Inukai went underneath her, also making a play on the Japanese-themed exhibition with her imagery. With the Samurai! show (co-curated by Eric Nakamura, editor and founder of Giant Robot Magazine) at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts now open to the public, the artists invited to paint murals for the exhibition were able to start their efforts last week. One of the artists invited, Andrew Hem, has created large scale public art in the past, but the other two, Audrey Kawasaki and Mari Inukai were not as experienced with mural painting. Last weekend in Los Angeles, alongside Robert Williams’ amazing new exhibition (covered), a group show celebrating 20 years of Juxtapoz also opened to the public. Curated by Andrew Hosner from Thinkspace and Gary Pressman from Copro Gallery, the showing featured artists, emerging and established, who have graced the pages of the trailblazing magazine. Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles showcased work from artists that they will work with in the future with a group show entitled Praeteritum Nunc Futurum. Listed officially were artists like Greg Simkins (seen above), Todd Carpenter, devNgosha, Andrew Hem, KMNDZ, Travis Louie, Nathan Ota, Lezley Saar, Jeff Soto, Nicola Verlato, Edward Walton Wilcox, Mark Whalen, William Wray but pieces from others could be seen as well. As noted, the actual city of Coachella does not derive any revenue from the annual music and arts festival and remains a poor farming community. Last weekend, the Oakland Museum of California opened a new exhibition, entitled SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the art and culture magazine Giant Robot. Along with a diverse selection of GR branded paraphenalia and publications, artists who have been involved with them over the years contributed original artwork as well as some wall murals. After seeing the sweet wave breakdancer that Andrew Hem (interviewed) painted for a show (covered) during POW! WOW! Hawaii, we are really looking forward to his exhibition opening next month at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Entitled Dream But Don’t Sleep, the exhibition will feature the Los Angeles based artist’s dream-like paintings, always inspired by his Asian heritage as well as his travels and personal experiences.
