Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – OHWOW Gallery

To kick off Art Basel, Miami staple OHWOW Gallery opened two ambitious shows last night – the group effort “It Ain’t Fair 2009” as well as David Lynch, Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse’s “Dark Night of the Soul.” With heavy hitters such as Kaws, Barry McGee and Jose Parla, combined with David Lynch’s photography and Danger Mouse’s music, OHWOW has further cemented themselves as the leaders in the Miami art scene. Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Wynwood Walls

AM swung by Deitch Project’s Wynwood Walls early yesterday to check out the massive mural installation, still in progress. Upon arriving at the complex, we were greeted by Martha Cooper (interviewed) who was busy taking shots of Futura, Shepard Fairey (featured), Os Gemeos and Kenny Scharf as they were busy installing their massive murals. With additional pieces by Aiko, Barry McGee and Swoon (interviewed), expect Wynwood Walls to present an impressive showing later this evening. More pictures after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Art Basel First Look

Earlier today, Art Basel Miami held it’s media preview and AM was on hand enjoy the biggest art show in North America. Basel Week Miami ’09: Kehinde Wiley x Michael Jackson

Stepping into the Deitch booth at Art Basel today, our attention was immediately drawn to the huge Michael Jackson painting by Kehinde Wiley. Apparently, Jackson contacted Kehinde a while back about a commission portrait after seeing his work at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, but Kehinde blew it off because he thought it was a joke. Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Emmanuel Perrotin Private View and Dinner

Last night, the first members of the AM crew flew into Miami for our coverage for Art Basel Week and what greeted us was the opening bash at Emmanuel Perrotin. The night’s exclusive events included cocktails, a fabulously catered dinner, an outdoor dance floor where the guests got down for the festivities. Mark Murphy has been going to Art Basel Week in Miami for a while now. Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Carmichael Gallery @ SCOPE

Another stong group show to check out in Miami this week is “It Ain’t Fair” at OHWOW Gallery (also the site of the STAGES show). Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Scott Musgrove with Jonathan Levine @ SCOPE

A project by Scott Musgrove that we first told you about here has finally come to fruition – just in time for Art Basel Week. He will be unveiling one of the massive bronze sculptures he has been working on entitled “The Great Lesser PlantSampler” (measuring 66 x 60 inches) at the SCOPE sculpture garden and for a nominal fee of $38K, you can bring one of these babies home with you from Miami.
