Streets: ABOVE – “It Takes Two To Tango” (Miami)

ABOVE (interviewed), whose contest for his new PASSPORT book is still ongoing here at AM, is continuing to hit up walls in Miami in preparation for his showing with White Walls at the SCOPE fair during Art Basel Week. As you can see, this new piece entitled It Takes Two To Tango, when taken in context with another mural we posted last week, shows the new themes he is working for this new exhibition. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Ryden Preview

Another reason to hit up the major art fairs is the opportunities to see the new gems from Mark Ryden in person. For this year’s Miami rendition of Art Basel, the lowbrow painter will be bringing at least two originals with him to the party – Main Street USA (seen above) for the Michael Kohn booth (Booth K10) and Pinxit Jajo (seen after the jump) for the Paul Kasmin booth (Booth B14).

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Videos: COPE2 – “Rise to the Occasion” Preview

Another show to check out while in Miami for this year’s Art Basel Week is a new solo from COPE2, who we recently saw in New York & Amsterdam. Still on a prolific pace, the wildstyle legend from the Bronx will be bringing a new body of work entitled Rise to the Occasion to the Wynwood Arts District (167 NW25th Street) for a show opening on December 1st and running to the 4th. Preview pics after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: Andrew Schoultz (Part i)

The San Francisco-based Andrew Schoultz is currently braving the heat in Miami working on a massive mural for Primary Flight that will take what sounds like over two weeks to complete. Seeing as this is only Day 6, fans heading over for Art Basel Week have much to look forward for when this insanely detailed and intricate wall is complete. While in town, make sure you stop by the Marx & Zavattero (site of Andrew’s solo in 2010) booth at PULSE to see some of […]

Publications: KAWS for Whitewall’s Winter Luxury Issue

For this year’s winter luxury issue, Whitewall invited KAWS to design the cover (in two versions). In addition to this collaboration on the front of the glossy, the magazine will publish a 12-page studio visit feature including an in-depth interview, portraits of the artist, images of his new work, and KAWS’ own sketches and blueprints of his sculptures and paintings. The new issues will be premiered at Art Basel Week Miami, but you can preorder them now here. Check out more preview images after the […]

Art Focus: Kon Trubkovich

Continuing our Art Focus feature, where we shine a light on those executing compelling artwork yet that perhaps don’t receive the attention they should, we bring you Kon Trubkovich, a Russian-born artist living and working in New York City. Drawing inspiration from the Cold War era Soviet Union he escaped early on, Kon’s work explores themes of lost identity and personal and cultural detachment. Through a series of oil paintings and graphite drawings, he captures distorted freeze-frame moments of video footage with immaculate clarity and […]

Videos: Above – “GIVE A WALL STREET BANKER…”

As you saw briefly in our recent update on the street festivities down in Miami, the Bay area-based ABOVE (interviewed) worked on a piece painted with his signature letters spelling out “GIVE A WALL ST. BANKER ENOUGH ROPE AND HE WILL HANG HIMSELF.” The mural, which also featured a man in a suit hanged in effigy along with the prolific street artist’s well known arrows, drew much attention and was featured on the local news. Enjoy the video (seen above) detailing the creative process that […]

Basel Week Miami ’11: Slap Happy @ Wynwood Walls

This year during Art Basel Miami, DB Burkeman—who brought us Stickers: Stuck Up Piece of Crap (covered) and The Sticker Wall (covered)—will be presenting Slap Happy at Wynwood Walls (covered). For the project, DB and Paul Weston invited 75 artists and designers from around the globe to create a same-sized black and white sticker. Among the invitees participating are such notable names as Aiko, Shepard Fairey, Anthony Lister, Chris Johanson, Stanley Donwood and The Designers Republic, just to name a few. Sticker packs, books and […]

Art Focus: Matthew Cox

This week, our Art Focus is on Philadelphia-based Matthew Cox, whose series of medical x-rays and embroidery recently caught our eyes. The Parsons and Otis trained artist has taken radiographs and stitched back in his imagined content partially over the skeletal elements leading to an intriguing new mesh of reality and the imaginary. For those interested, Embroidered X-Rays will be showing at the Packer/Schopf Gallery (Booth E-407) this year at PULSE in Miami, part of Art Basel Week. This particular series of works is just one […]
