Basel Week Miami ’15: Art Basel Miami Beach // Positions Sector

One of the biggest criticisms of art fairs leveled by art lovers is that it is not the proper venue for properly conceived and realized artist exhibitions. Fair booths typically contain a collection of discrete works that are made to be sold and consumed. Art Basel Miami Beach’s Positions sector is the response to this criticism. The galleries that show in this part of the fair are given a platform for a single artist to present one major project. This includes installations or exhibitions that include multiple works […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Recap: KITH Homage

Another event that caught our attention during Basel Week Miami was KITH Homage, a group exhibition curated by Joshua Liner Gallery. To celebrate each of Ronnie Fieg’s previously (and soon to be) released Gel-Lyte III designs with Asics, 14 artists were asked to reinterpreted the founder of Kith NYC’s inspirations to create a piece for each of his past designs and for one future model. Participants in the pop-up show included Wayne White, Josh Sperling, Alfred Steiner, Greg Lamarche, Michael Kagan, Erin M. Riley, Evan Hecox, Riusuke Fukahori, Paul Wackers, Jim […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Recap: Untitled

Another strong satellite fair seen during this year’s Basel Week Miami was certainly Untitled. Showing a diverse selection of contemporary works, the roster included 119 international galleries, not-for-profit exhibition spaces and institutions from over 20 countries. From familiar and well established names to young, new emerging talents from around the globe, the fair included paintings, installations, sculptures as well as performance art pieces. Aside from classic works by Barry Mcgee, Claire Rojas, Jen Stark, Daniel Arsham or Ed Moses, Untitled introduced us to some new names and fresh […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Overtime: ABMB Edition

Special Art Basel Miami Beach edition of Overtime, covering more stories from the fair week in Miami (click on bolded words for more information): Woman (identified as Siyuan Zhao) follows and proceeds to stab another woman (identified as Shin Seo Young) with an X-Acto knife at Art Basel Miami Beach. Fair organizers respond to the incident. More photographs of the scene are released. Page Six profile of Siyuan Zhao, who thankfully failed in her mission of killing three people. Christian Viveros-Faune thinks that Art Basel Miami Beach is degrading […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Streets: Wynwood Walls

Once again, the Wynwood Arts District became the capital of the street art world during Basel Week Miami. With artists from around the globe painting on every corner of this lively neighborhood and related events happening at local bars, clubs, galleries and parks, one of the main events was surely going down at Wynwood Walls. This year, the outdoor museum of street art ran by Goldman Properties added a nice new selection of fresh works to their existing collection. The main area got fresh new piece […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Streets: Li-Hill x James Bullough – “Radioactive Cascade”

As we continue our look at the prolific street activity centered around the Wynwood District during Basel Week Miami, the next mural that caught our eyes is the collaborative effort between Li-Hill (interviewed) and James Bullough. Taking advantage of how well Li-Hill’s kinetic imagery and Bullough’s glitch-like style mesh together, its creation was timed to coincide with the COP21 Paris Climate Conference. Painted for Pangeaseed’s Seawalls series of walls and curated by Urban Nation, this piece entitled Radioactive Cascade references some of the dangers that the world’s oceans are facing. More […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Streets: Smog One

While our coverage of Basel Week Miami has so far focused on the fairs, shows, and satellite events, there is another aspect of our time there that we haven’t started sharing with you yet – art on the streets. First up is a new piece from the locally-based Smog One painted in the Wynwood District (328 NW 29th St.) Put up on the side of NAPA Auto Parts, the mural features elements that the writer born and raised in Paris is known for – 3D rendering skills […]

Basel Week Miami ’15: “Unrealism” (Presented by Larry Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch)

One of the most anticipated satellite events of this year’s Basel Week Miami was the Larry Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch collaboration – an exhibition entitled Unrealism. The show opened on the 2nd of December at The Moore Building in the Miami Design District and will stay on view until the 6th of December. Showcasing works by over 50 international artists, this exceptionally well curated show celebrates the recent revival of interest in figurative painting and sculpture. Very diverse in their styles, interest and aesthetics, the selected participants are some of the […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Recap: PULSE

The AM team spent couple of hours yesterday browsing the two beachside pavilions of the PULSE art fair in Miami. The 11th edition of the fair was once again a great platform for emerging and established galleries to present their artists’ work to the collectors and art enthusiasts visiting Basel Week Miami. Out of booths from over 80 international galleries, some of the work that stood out for us were the large Jose Parla canvases, Richard Garrison minimalist chart compositions, Christian Rex van Minnen paintings, Nicola Verlato and […]
