Basel Week Miami ’09 – Dana Schutz @ Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL)

With the demand for quality evident by the current buyer’s market in contemporary art, Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL) brought out their best artist, the painter Dana Schutz, for Art Basel Miami 2009.  The gallery’s booth consisted of new paintings by Schutz and a film and sculpture from Nathalie Djurberg.  Schutz is considered one of today’s best young painters and frequently appears on many critics and collectors best-of lists, as well as part of major museum collections.  Her last solo show at the gallery, Missing Pictures, […]

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Rubell Family Collection – “Beg Borrow and Steal”

Good artists borrow, great artists steal. ~Pablo Picasso Coinciding with Art Basel Miami 2009, the Rubell Family Collection opened their latest exhibition, entitled Beg, Borrow, and Steal.  The exhibition, filling the entire 45,000 sq. ft. museum, consists of 260 works by 74 artists of different generations and examines the role of appropriation throughout modern and contemporary art.  It was born through a series of conversations the Rubells had with artists Kelly Walker and Wade Guyton.  It deals with artistic influence, artists building upon the legacies […]

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Wynwood Walls Video

Here’s another sweet video from the minds at Vernissage TV. This time, they are profiling the Wynwood Walls project that we have been covering all of last week at Art Basel. It was a pretty mind-blowing to see so many large murals from quality artists all in the same location, something that probably doesn’t happen without the influence of Deitch with the backdrop of the premiere art fair in the U.S. Discuss Art Basel here.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Ron English – Primary Flight Mural

As Jeff Soto (covered) was busy creating his contribution to this year’s Primary Flight, AM favorite Ron English was busy working on a mural of his own. Another rendition of his classic “Guernica” tribute, Ron’s hand painted masterpiece features many of his most identifiable characters.  As an added bonus, Ron put up some new, colorful wheatpastes, something we haven’t seen him do in quite a while. More pictures after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Barry McGee Installation @ Deitch

Amongst the many things we’ve seen over in Miami this year, perhaps the most talked about piece of work (certainly between the AM crew and our friends out here) was an previously unsold Barry McGee’s “99 bottle” installation over at Deitch Projects booth at Art Basel. Reputed to have sold for a mere 100K at this year’s fair, it would not have been hard, just among collector friends in Miami to come up with the money and then to split the bottles up. Perhaps not […]

Basel Week Miami ’09: Mark Ryden

One of the highlights of our trip to Miami was definitely seeing this new Mark Ryden piece revealed at the Paul Kasmin Gallery booth at Art Basel. The breathtaking 72″ x 48″ piece “Incarnation” seems to be a happy medium between his new minimalistic style seen at his last solo at Tomio Koyama in Japan and his older imagery.  Sold for almost 900K, it appears the market for one of the top artists in the so-called “low brow” movement is still strong. Take a look […]

Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Art Asia

Showing adjacent to the SCOPE, the Art Asia opened its doors to fair-goers exposing the Art Basel crowd to the special flavor of their region’s art. Featuring art from countries such as Korea, China, Japan, India, Cambodia, Thailand, and Taiwan, the work definitely brought some fresh ideas with its Asian flair. More images after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’09: Jeff Soto – Primary Flight Mural

There are so many artists getting up at Basel Week Miami this year that it’s hard to keep up with everything. On our list today was Jeff Soto’s (interviewed) mural for Primary Flight. The almost completed piece, although different, is reminiscent of a mural he did in London during his show at StolenSpace in May. In fact, Soto tells us that doing some street work in the UK (the first time in 10 years) started him itching for more outdoor displays of his art like […]

Video: Art Basel x Vernissage TV

If you enjoyed our first look at Art Basel a couple days ago, you’ll also like this video overview from Vernissage TV. The footage gives a idea as the feel, atmosphere, and cross section of attendees and art from the main fair this year. Look for more from AM as we focus in on specific artists and booths in our upcoming coverage… Discuss Art Basel here.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Barry McGee – Wynwood Walls Mural

After opening his epic show last month at PRISM, Barry McGee moved on to Art Basel for his next project. For his Wynwood Walls installation, McGee covered an entire building with his signature geometric patterns, left plenty of tags, trademark imagery, and threw in an overturned car as well, smoke machine and all.  AM spent some time salivating over the details on the site all the while documenting everything to share with you! More images after the jump…
