Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – “Stages” Exhibition

AM stopped by “Stages” last night on the final leg of its journey.  One of the hottest shows of Art Basel Week opened with many of the artists in attendance including Jose Parla, KAWS, Shepard Fairey (featured), D-zine, Futura, Rossom Crowe, Os Gemeos, Tom Sachs, and Eric White (seen above with his mother – a cancer survivor). The paintings will be auctioned off to benefit LIVESTRONG and the fight against cancer. More pics after the jump…

Aaron Young was in Miami for the final stop of the Stages exhibition (more on that later) and also the “It Ain’t Fair” (covered) show at OHWOW Gallery. While there, he also took time to create some pieces at a special session with some serious buyers on hand.  Take a look at this video of his “motorcycle art” courtesy of SLAMXHYPE. Basel Week Miami ’09: SCOPE Fair

If you have been following our coverage, you will know that many of our previews this year for Art Basel Week were from the SCOPE fair. This is because many of the galleries and artists we follow decided to make a showing there. We stopped by to take a look today and snapped some pics to share with you all. This large “finger-cutting” installation from Judith Supine certainly held our attention at the New Image Art booth. Take a look at what else caught our […]

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Marcel Dzama

This new piece from Marcel Dzama caught our eye when we stopped by the David Zwirner booth yesterday at the Art Basel press preview. Painted on perforated player piano paper (alliteration not intended), the new works appear more complex and rich. Not only were these available for sale, it was also a preview for what to expect from Dzama’s show at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal early next year in Canada. More images of the pieces as well as the additional back room inventory […]

Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – OHWOW Gallery

To kick off Art Basel, Miami staple OHWOW Gallery opened two ambitious shows last night – the group effort “It Ain’t Fair 2009” as well as David Lynch, Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse’s “Dark Night of the Soul.” With heavy hitters such as Kaws, Barry McGee and Jose Parla, combined with David Lynch’s photography and Danger Mouse’s music, OHWOW has further cemented themselves as the leaders in the Miami art scene. More pictures after the jump.

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Wynwood Walls

AM swung by Deitch Project’s Wynwood Walls early yesterday to check out the massive mural installation, still in progress. Upon arriving at the complex, we were greeted by Martha Cooper (interviewed) who was busy taking shots of Futura, Shepard Fairey (featured), Os Gemeos and Kenny Scharf as they were busy installing their massive murals. With additional pieces by Aiko, Barry McGee and Swoon (interviewed), expect Wynwood Walls to present an impressive showing later this evening. More pictures after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Art Basel First Look

Earlier today, Art Basel Miami held it’s media preview and AM was on hand enjoy the biggest art show in North America. Much like last year’s Basel (here), the seemingly endless columns of blue chip galleries provided a tsunami of top notch art work for all that will attend this high caliber show. We only had a few hours to run down the aisles, so enjoy this first look at the goodies. We’ll be back soon enough with an in-depth look when we take our time […]

Basel Week Miami ’09: Kehinde Wiley x Michael Jackson

Stepping into the Deitch booth at Art Basel today, our attention was immediately drawn to the huge Michael Jackson painting by Kehinde Wiley. Apparently, Jackson contacted Kehinde a while back about a commission portrait after seeing his work at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, but Kehinde blew it off because he thought it was a joke. When Kehinde realized it was a real request, he sent over some art historical books to Jackson for him to look overbut unfortunately, the singer passed away before he […]

Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Emmanuel Perrotin Private View and Dinner

Last night, the first members of the AM crew flew into Miami for our coverage for Art Basel Week and what greeted us was the opening bash at Emmanuel Perrotin. The night’s exclusive events included cocktails, a fabulously catered dinner, an outdoor dance floor where the guests got down for the festivities. Of course the art was the draw as the gallery space opened a new series of shows including the unveiling of the new “tank chairs” from Pharrell Williams, as well as solo shows from Matthew Day Jackson and […]
