Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: RETNA

A major player during this year’s Art Basel Week Miami, it seemed like RETNA (featured) and his work was in demand everywhere. Not only did we see his handiwork at the Primary Projects group show, in the Wynwood District, and at various fairs, we also had the chance to attend a Q&A session at his temporary luxury home on Hibiscus Island. Basel Week Miami ’11: Do Ho Suh @ Lehmann Maupin

Another artist whose work caught our eye during Art Basel Week Miami was Do Ho Suh’s creations for Lehmann Maupin at the main fair. Like his showing at the NY gallery back in September (covered), the Korean sculptor and installation artist brought some captivating household items created from translucent fabric that attracted many fair-goers to examine their ethereal details up close. Basel Week Miami ’11: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we attended during Art Basel Week Miami was Scope. Housing a variety of genres, we saw a healthy mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with. From OsGemeos to Roa, Ron English to Ray Caesar, Aakash Nihalani to Jenny Morgan, there seemed to be something for everyone at this fair. Check out more photos after the jump.

During our sojourn into the art extravaganza in Miami known as Art Basel Week, we were happy to be able to visit the artistic duo FriendsWithYou in their home base, office, and gallery space in the Design District. Basel Week Miami ’11: Rubell Family Collection

One of the most prestigious private showings at Art Basel Miami Week every year is from the Rubell Family Collection. This year, the group show culled from their extensive holdings was entitled American Exuberance, a reference to the fact that all artists included were American citizens and living in the States leading to a keen observation of American culture, economy and politics. Yesterday, AM stopped by the M Building in Miami to photograph the newest exhibition from French photographer JR. This showing was an Art Basel Week Miami supplement to his current show at Galerie Perrotin and featured photos as well as wheatpasted found materials from his various projects in the past. Street activity has definitely been strong during Art Basel Week Miami, and this is one of the things that sets it apart from the more prestigious original fair in Switzerland. While walking through the myriad of streets where murals were being put up, we passed by Aussie couple Dabs Myla as they painted this piece. We passed by the Kohn Compound yesterday as we strolled through the Wynwood District in Miami and came across Remi/Rough working on one of outer walls and gate. The UK-based street artist was prepping for the In Situ show put on by Graffuturism tonight featuring post-graffiti abstraction for those interested. Art Basel Week in Miami certainly has seen their fair share of Andrew Schoultz’s work with no less than five opportunities (six if you count his outdoor mural for Primary Flight) to admire the Bay Area artist’s work. Since we are covering Art Basel Week Miami right now, this week’s new artist for our Art Focus is from the PULSE Art Fair showing at the Rena Bransten Gallery booth. Tracey Snelling is a Bay Area artist who creates mixed media installations incorporating photographs, miniature constructions of buildings or towns, video screens, and projections.
