Upcoming: Lydia Fong, Todd James, Steve Powers, Alicia McCarthy @ Muddguts

Tomorrow night (April 20th) in Brooklyn, Lydia Fong, Todd James, Steve Powers, and Alicia McCarthy will be putting on a show at Muddguts. For those in the know, as well as from the artwork used to promote the exhibition, it looks like Fong (aka Barry McGee) will be joining his Street Market buddies James and Powers and has invited his Mission School art movement colleague McCarthy to the party as well. Head over between 6-8 pm (427 Graham Ave) if you want to enjoy the festivities. […]

Showing: Barry Mcgee @ Cheim & Read

Five years since his last, and inaugural exhibition, with Cheim & Read, Barry Mcgee opened his latest solo last week at the New York gallery. The show is once again an eclectic mix of original works, installation, sculptures, various paraphernalia and personal objects, all displayed and installed in the most unexpected and uncompromising manner. For this large showcase the American artist transported everything from his San Francisco studio that “resonates” for him, as he has describes it. A large, floor to ceiling stack of vintage surfboards dominates […]

Inside The Home Of Brian “KAWS” Donnelly

It’s always interesting to take a peek into the home of one of your favorite artists (also see the Rydens and Shepard Fairey), especially if they are collectors themselves. Architectural Digest recently stopped by the home of Brian Donnelly, better know as KAWS, and his wife and artist Julia Chiang to give us an intriguing look at their Brooklyn abode. The converted triangle-shaped industrial building features both living space as well as administrative offices and art storage, something Donnelly certainly needs judging by his art collection. Just from […]

Previews: “Sea Sick in Paradise” @ Depart Foundation Malibu Village

Few things remind us of summer in America more than surfing and Southern California, specifically, Malibu. When you combine those two things with art, you have a fantastic timely mix for a warm weather exhibition. DEPART Foundation presents Sea Sick in Paradise, a group show curated by Amy Yao.  The exhibition features works in a variety of media by 44 artists (including Barry McGee and Margaret Kilgallen), many of whom are surfers themselves or inspired by surfing, the ocean, and coastal culture. Showing in context with these visual artists’ works are […]

The installations by the world famous SF-based artist will feature multi-colored geo panels installed in several locations on the exterior of the Moscone Center Garage, along with hand painted signature characters. Through 2018, seven alleys in the neighborhood also have plans to […]

Recap: Barry McGee @ MC06 // Monster Children

Barry McGee has always been known for doing things the unconventional way – from mediums used to installing and organizing shows, he keeps finding new ways to do the unexpected. His recent RVCA–supported show in Sydney, on the 17th of March, at Sydney’s Monster Children Magazine’s MC06 space was an example of that. Back for a show in Australia after an 11 year absence, Barry setup a one night event that lasted for two hours sharp. This time, there was no large installations, flipped vans, big clusters of smaller works or any of the […]

Previews: Barry McGee @ MC06, Monster Children, Sydney

Eleven years since his last Australian solo show, Barry McGee returns “down under” for a one night event. In conjunction with RVCA, this Thursday night, the 17th of March, Sydney’s Monster Children magazine will be opening (and closing) his exclusive solo show at their exhibition space MC06 in Camperdown. For this show, McGee will be exhibiting an extremely limited edition display of new works, including a series of painted surfboards and smaller works on paper. All the pieces on display will be on sale that night with a percentage of profits […]

Openings: “PDFW” @ Slow Culture

Last month Slow Culture moved from LA’s Highland Park to Chinatown, and on March 4th, they opened the PDFW: Performance. Drawing. Film. Writing. group show by THE DFW crew. Curated by Barry Mcgee and made possible with support from Obey and Vans, the show marks a new phase for the secret international art club that is DFW. Established as an art gallery, Slow Culture’s new space is meant to provide artists with a workspace and studio to help foster new projects, workshops, and installations. With their general idea being to present everything from visual artists to musicians […]

Openings: Barry McGee – “China Boo” @ Ratio 3

After an interval of seven years, Barry McGee is back at Ratio 3 in San Francisco and this time he brought along 50 of his friends to join him. This particular show had a few surprises and whole lot of what we love about the Bay Area legend such as painted signs, geometric paintings, customized surfboards, painted bottles, sketches, and photography. The main gallery hosted the man known as Twist’s work with the vacant store next door converted to the L. Quan – Check Cashing & Healing Arts Centre for all […]
