Showing: Beyond The Streets (London)

The art establishment has a less than distinguished history when it comes to embracing artists who fall outside of its comfortably familiar linear narrative of western art. Impressionism was a derogatory name bestowed by the art critic Louis Leroy and the fabled Salon des Refusés exhibition of work by the movement’s most prominent figures was comprised of pieces rejected by the the Académie des Beaux-Arts’s annual exhibition in Paris. With stylewriting – or graffiti, as its early detractors called it – history has repeated itself […]

Releases: Shepard Fairey x Beyond The Streets x Modernica Chair

One of the fun parts of the BEYOND THE STREETS exhibition (covered) is walking through the gift shop to see what unique offerings are available. Some items are now online on their website, including a sweet collaboration between Shepard Fairey (featured) and Modernica, who have a rich recent history of working with artists. The Side Shell Eiffel Chair, infused with OBEY imagery and limited to 500, is just one of the chairs available (also Futura, Basquiat, Keith Haring), so head over here to take a look and add one to […]

Previews: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles)

On May 6th, BEYOND THE STREETS will open its doors in Los Angeles (1667 N Main St), an immersive survey of graffiti and street art, the likes of which haven’t been seen since Art in the Streets (covered) in 2011. This is not surprisingly seeing as Roger Gastman was an associate curator of that show back then at the MOCA, and will be the main curator of this new exhibition. Working with a roster of over 100+ artists, 40,000+ sq. ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space has been converted […]

Upcoming: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles) – Curated by Roger Gastman

In 2011, Roger Gastman was an associate curator of Art in the Streets, the first major US museum (at MOCA) survey of graffiti and street art. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on these art forms and movements, he returns to curate a groundbreaking follow-up to the show, called BEYOND THE STREETS. The spectacular exhibition will include over 100 artists (including perhaps one very big surprise one?) showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, and installations (including a re-creation, in partnership with adidas Skateboarding, of the famous Venice Pavilion), on more […]
