Openings: Blaine Fontana & David Rice – “Chromagrain” @ Svper Ordinary

Portland residents David Rice and Blaine Fontana besieged the Mile High City recently with their latest show Chromagrain at Svper Ordinary Gallery. Residents of Denver are familiar with what these two are capable of together as their collaboration mural was one of the featured pieces at last year’s Colorado Crush street art festival. A scant 12 months later they are back in Denver, this time with close to 15 new pieces all featuring their signature imagery & geometry combinations, welcomed by a large crowd of enthusiastic fans. Discuss Blaine […]

Recap: Forest For The Trees (Portland) – Part I

With most of the Forest For The Trees murals finished, now’s the time to do the first part of our recap of this year’s event (also see 2013, 2014). The name of the mural festival comes from the phrase “they can’t see the forest for the trees” which signifies the inability to understand the greater picture when you’re too focused solely on what’s in front of you. Organizers Gage Hamilton and Matt Wagner of Hellion Gallery hope that the art will draw Portland’s residents away from their daily routine. Enjoy some photos […]

Recap / Streets: Forest For The Trees 2014

After bringing you photos last month of the impressive collaborative mural from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) and Souther Salazar, we now have a recap  for the rest of the Forest For The Trees (FFTT) event. Most of the artists for this year have already left their mark in Portland for the nonprofit public mural project including Mary Iverson (seen above). Take a look at the rest of the walls below as well as some videos…

Openings: “Space//Squared” @ White Walls Gallery

Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). This time around, participating artists were again asked to contribute artwork in a 10 x 10″ format.  Along with pieces from over 100 artists (list seen below), Adam Friedman and Robert Minervini also created a site-specific installation featuring a series of paintings interspersed throughout mural elements. Roster: 2501, Adam Friedman, Adam Weir, Akiko Masker, Alex Lukas, Alicia Dubnyckyj, […]

Streets: Forest For The Trees – Murals in Portland

Over the last couple of weeks, organisers and curators Gage Hamiliton and Matt Wagner (of Hellion Gallery) have assembled 15 international artists to participate in Forest For The Trees. The mural project in Portland, Oregon saw Blaine Fontana (work pictured above), Erik Otto, Kamea Hadar, Gage Hamiliton, J. Shea, Marcelo Macedo, MADSTEEZ, Michael Salter, MHAK, MEGGS, Oyama Enrico Isamu Letter, Sam Rodriguez, Rone, Taka Sudo, Yoskay Yamamoto, Zach Yarrington and Jun Inoue all participate in the city-wide project to bring art to previously bare walls. Although it has one of most vibrant artist communities in the United States, Portland doesn’t have a […]

Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Publications: VNA Issue 22

Our friends at team VNA are at it again! Now onto issue 22 and hot off the presses featuring Vhils (filmed) on the cover, along with some favourites of ours between the sheets such as AJ Fosik, Blaine Fontana, Cranio, Husk Mit Navn and Moneyless as VNA continues to spread it’s wings further afield than the graffiti and street art base it started out with. Also, it looks like the VNA crew are moving HQ in the near future as well, so peep their store for some […]

Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Each artist is either making work on a found / owned postcard and adapting / adding […]

Studio Visits: Blaine Fontana

Another highlight of AM’s Portland trip for the Space//Form exhibition at Breeze Block Gallery was a chance to meet up with long time online friend Blaine Fontana and take a look around his studio. Blaine’s studio is located in a wonderful 1911 brick built 4 storey former seed warehouse in Portland. The building is now occupied solely as artist studios and retains a plenitude of its original features in addition to its high ceilings. The interior of Blaine’s headquarters has been meticulously crafted in his own style, employing an […]

Openings: “Live Free” curated by Mike Maxwell @ Hellion Gallery

Opening on the same night as Space//Form in Portland, artist Mike Maxwell (pictured on the right above with Jocelyn Duke, Mark Dean Veca and Hellion owner Matt Wagner) curated a group exhibition at Hellion Gallery. Taking the exhibition’s title Live Free from the regular series of podcast interviews with fellow artists and creatives, and also his own ethos on life (see Mike’s tattooed knuckles in one of our pictures below), Maxwell brought together a selection of artists he has interviewed over time. With the podcast […]
