Los Angeles contemporary art staple Blum & Poe was yet another in a seemingly never ending stream of must-see booths at the main fair, Art Basel Miami Beach. Of particular interest was a massive new work by Takashi Murakami, exhibiting the Japanese pop art icon’s unique range and continued evolution within his self-branded “superflat” style. It seems that some shows get all the glitz & glamour, and some shows just slide in & out without much ruckus. But one things for sure, high profile or not, Takashi Murakami and his Kaikai Kiki juggernaut do not half-step anything. Last night marked the opening of Yoshitomo Nara’s solo show at Blum & Poe (previewed and teased). The show features a large scale sculptural installation, and a new series of paintings and drawings focusing on Nara’s signature pastel-hued girls. At the center of the exhibition was a prairie-style wagon installation by YNG, a collaboration between Yoshitomo Nara and Japanese design firm Graf.
