Streets: Super A – “Resonance” (Boston)

Last month, The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in Boston invited another artist to paint a mural on the MassDOT building in Dewey Square Park. Super A follows in the footsteps of Mehdi Ghanyooloo (2o16) and Os Gemeos (2012) with a pair of Barn Swallows breaking out of a glass cloch that fit perfectly in the architectural confines of the structure. Streets: Okuda – “Air, Sea, Land” (Boston)

Earlier this month, Okuda completed his largest public installation project to date in Boston’s Seaport District. Curated by Justkids, the seven large-scale sculptures from the Spanish artist features his distinctive kaleidoscope of colors and geometric shapes. Air, Sea, Land is inspired by the intersection of elements at the dynamic waterfront neighborhood and continues exploring some of the street artist’s favorite themes – “the tale of life and coexistence, and the mythological edge where the animal kingdom encounters with the human world.” Discuss Okuda here.

Mehdi Ghadyanloo was recently invited in by the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in Boston to paint his first mural in America. The prolific Tehran-based artist worked on the large 70 x 76 foot wall in Boston’s Dewey Square Park (also painted by Os Gemeos in 2012) over the course of tree weeks creating a piece he calls Spaces of Hope, featuring some of his signature surrealist imagery. Returning to Boston for the third and final piece in a series of public works on the tallest building in the city, JR (interviewed) decided place his new work on the 44th to 50th floor. Standing at 150 feet tall and 86 feet wide, the piece is the tallest work ever envisioned by the French photograffeur. After recovering from a period of illness, the talented El Mac is taking advantage of his improved health to do what he loves best – spread his imagery via public art. His latest effort entitled Ars et Scientia was recently painted in Boston at Northeastern University on the facade of Meserve Hall, which was built in 1893. The 4th Wall Project opened the first major Boston solo show earlier this month from Japanese artist Kenji Nakayama. Departing from his typical work, the Beantown-based painter has produced a series focused on shapes, lines, textures, and colors collectively entitled Études. The forty nine pieces on display are informed by his background in sign-painting as well as the art of pinstriping – the art of decorative painting that Nakayama spent the last decade mastering. One of the best gallery shows we’ve seen lately is the current exhibition at James Cohan by Shinique Smith, entitled Bold As Love. Smith, who is known for her mixed medium sculptures and paintings, draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources, ranging from abstract expressionism to graffiti to Eastern religious mandalas.
