Basel Week Miami ’13: The Still House Group – “Straight II DVD”

One of the booths we were excited to see at the NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) art fair during Art Basel Week was by New York Collective The Still House Group. Interestingly enough when we arrived, all we found was a cryptic Xerox copy machine asking us to press the button. Openings: Bill McRight – “Willing To Lose” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Last week, Bill McRight (interviewed) opened up a show alongside Alex Lukas (interviewed) and his post-apocalyptal imagery at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. Entitled Willing To Lose, the new body of work from McRight consisted of his signature home-made shanks and other weaponry as well as some skull-based engraved mirrors. David Cata is a multidisciplinary artist from Spain who recently created a series of works where he sewed portraits of people who have left a mark on his life into the palm of his hand. Overexposed Emotions is kind of an autobiographical diary featuring faces of family, friends, partners, teachers, and others interwoven into his body just like their lives have been interwoven his own. Last week, a group show to benefit cancer charities opened up at the Roq La Rue gallery in Seattle entitled Unpredictable Gravity. Raising over 20K so far, the success of the show is due in no small part to the efforts of curator Robbie Lowery and the stellar contributions from the artists. On February 7th, Space 1026 in Philadelphia will be opening a solo show from Erin M Riley (interviewed) entitled Crimson Landslide. These new pieces from the young artist, who recently relocated to Brooklyn from Philly, will depict everyday objects and the detritus of female identity like toiletries, birth control pills, and more.
