San Diego gets itself a new gallery this weekend with the opening of Low Gallery in the North Park area. The premiere exhibition launching the space is a two-person show with local boy Mike Maxwell and Asheville, NC artist Alli Good. Well & Good opens on Saturday, the 7th of September. Previews: St. Monci – ‘Adventures in Technicolor’ @ 1975 Gallery

St. Monci is an artist that has been catching our eye lately. From his delicately composed gallery work to his large scale murals, his clean line-work and use of colour presents a strong abstract aesthetic. This weekend, he opens his solo exhibition at Rochester, NY’s 1975 Gallery. Adventures in Technicolor opens on Saturday, 7th September, and from the looks of these installation shots taken by photographer Hannah Betts it would be well worth checking out in person if you are in the area.

On October 4th, the Evoke Contemporary in New Mexico will be presenting a new solo exhibition from Kent Williams. Making his return to the showspace (see 2010), the Los Angeles-based painter has put forth work collectively entitled OPHTHALM: new drawings + paintings. If you were in San Francisco last year, you may remember the show (covered) Dave Kinsey put on at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery. Come Thursday, September 5th, FFDG will be welcoming him back for a second show entitled Black White featuring new mixed media paintings and wood sculptural works. It saddens the staff here at AM to have to bring news of the tragic passing of Matt Doust last week from a seizure, just days away from his debut United States solo exhibition that was to be held at the Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. The young Perth-raised painter, who was shortlisted for the Archibald prize in 2011, a tribute to how well regarded his portraiture skills were in Australia. Before heading to New York for his big solo at the new Galerie Perrotin location in November, KAWS will be taking a side trip to Philadelphia for a show opening on October 11th at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). British artists Kai & Sunny, who we’ve been long time admirers of here at AM are set to open their first exhibition in the USA next week at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles. Caught By The Nest sees the duo continuing their nature infused themes in their monochromatic highly graphical style. Our friends at Very Nearly Almost (VNA) recently held a release party to celebrate the launch of their latest issue where Brooklyn collective Faile (featured) created a limited edition print by silkscreening their artwork on the cover. Each issue one was also hand signed and featured additional artists such as Morning Breath, Prefab77, Agostino Iacurci, Eelus, Hedof, Michael Sieben, Days, Peque, Vibes to name a few.
