Videos: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Black Christmas Tree” @ The Smithsonian

Just in time for Christmas, Cai Guo-Qiang has brought his pyrotechnics skills back to America (see Los Angeles earlier this year). Commissioned by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the renowned Chinese contemporary artist executed three separate explosions in a performance entitled Black Christmas Tree described as acupuncture treatment for arts in the city. Surprisingly, the tree is still alive post-detonation and will be re-planted elsewhere. Enjoy the video below… Via Designboom. Discuss Cai Guo-Qiang here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: Matthew Marks Gallery @ Art Basel

The only thing you need to know about Matthew Marks Gallery is that it represents Jasper Johns, (arguably) the greatest living artist in the world. Looking further, you will see that the gallery also represents other top artists as well. Its booth at Art Basel this year includes an orange, two-panel painting by Ellsworth Kelly, new sculptures by Charles Ray and Katharina Fritsch, three recent paintings by Paul Sietsema, new sculptures by Darren Almond, as well as pieces by Willem de Kooning, Luigi Ghirri, Thomas Demand, […]

Openings: Laura Ball – “Minotaur” @ David B. Smith

Last week, the David B. Smith Gallery presented all new watercolors from Laura Ball collectively entitled Minotaur. While exploring the PULSE art fair (covered) in Miami, we came across several of the paintings that will be in the show which we shared with you here. Now with these new photos, you will be able to appreciate the new entire body of work which features her signature creative amalgamations of smaller creatures to form larger animals. Basel Week Miami ’12: Art Miami – Highlights

One of the mainstay satellite fairs in Miami was Art Miami. As previously seen in our coverage of their offshoot fair CONTEXT where pieces purported to be street works from Banksy (not authenticated from PC though), this combined pair of fairs was a feast for the eyes. Numerous mediums were on display – not only classic paintings, but sculptures, installations & photographs galore. With dealers and galleries showing side by side, this fair had a wide range of artists in varying stages of career development. From […]

Openings: Dave Kinsey – “Everything At Once” @ Joshua Liner

Last week, Dave Kinsey unveiled a new body of work at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. Entitled Everything At Once, this large series is another step forward in the LA-based artist’s magnetic style of painting. Using his abstract techniques and unique color palate, the paintings convey a world gone mad, with media, perpetual conflict and the struggles between the urban and natural worlds. Also for this show, the works landed on both ends of the size scale – some of his largest to date alongside a […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Joshua Liner Gallery @ PULSE

While checking out the PULSE art fair (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami, we made sure to stop by the Joshua Liner booth to see what they had to offer. Featuring a diverse mix of work from artists on their roster, we were particularly enamored with a cluster of ESPO works, a new Ian Francis painting, and a new sound sculpture installation in the form of a chandelier from David Ellis and Roberto Carlos Lange. Check out these and more in our photos below… Discuss […]

Entering several at a time, each fan was allowed to purchase the pieces they wanted as long as they stuck to the one-per-artist rule. As you can see, with the amount of work available and names hidden, […]
