Streets: World Roundup (June 11 – 17)

We start this weeks roundup of street activity with this new fun piece from Dabs Myla. As you can see, their choice of subject matter was quite interesting and can be summed up by their description – “Poop Shooting, Vampire Dicking, and Crack Smoking.” The piece was painted for Roger Gastman for his backyard (thus the Orioles reference). Another booth we spent time at during Art HK was the one stocked by Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki gallery. Their booth held a solo feature for Rei Sato and her latest body of work entitled All Monsters Hold Secrets in Their Grasp. In what looks to a be a impressive lineup, Arcadia Fine Arts in New York will be hosting a new group exhibition entitled Sur-Realism this weekend, with the opening on Saturday, June 16th. Although not 100% confirmed, artists scheduled to be submitting work include Martin Wittfooth, Billy Norrby, Brian Despain, Brad Kunkle, Eric White, Aron Wiesenfeld and more. Showing: Andrew Schoultz & Richard Colman – “Destroyer” @ Cooper Cole

Renewing the the synergy found in Copenhagen during their joint show, Andrew Schoultz and Richard Colman headed up north to work together on another exhibtion – Destroyer. Held at Cooper Cole Gallery in Toronto, the two friends brought along some of their signature imagery in the form of paintings as well as some sweet indoor murals. It looks like the busy James Jean (featured) is already in London prepping his installation for the Gin & Juice group show at Ivory & Black. Art HK ’12 Art Fair – Mizuma Gallery

Another booth AM stops by whenever we are at art fairs the Tokyo-based Mizuma Gallery. Not only do they represent one of our favorite artists, Masakatsu Sashie and his entrancing orbs of futuristic and post-apocalyptic goodness as well as the talents of Akino Kondoh, but their roster of artists always includes much of the up-and-coming talent from Japan. Basel Week Switzerland ’12: Haroshi for Jonathan LeVine Gallery (SCOPE)

Another booth to check out if you are lucky enough to be at Art Basel right now is the Jonathan LeVine setup at SCOPE. Japanese sculptor Haroshi has contributed three pairs of transparent shoes, fitted with feet sculpted from skateboards, a signature touch. Openings: Rostarr – “IKONOCLYSM” @ Common Gallery

Last month, the Common Gallery in Tokyo filled their walls with work from Romon Kimin Yang (AKA Rostarr). As you saw in our studio visit prior to the opening, the NY-based artist prepared a series of diverse work featuring his signature calligraphy coupled with some references to Japan for this latest showing. Openings: Prune Nourry – “Holy River” @ The Invisible Dog

Last month, Prune Nourry premiered her solo exhibition Holy River at The Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn. The packed opening night showcased the talents of Ms. Nourry with her unique style of mixing traditional mediums such as photography, sculpture, and installation in addition to her creative use of video (seen here) and performance art. The subjects focused on were the citizens of India, their unique gender selection, and traditions surrounding water which she observed and researched over the course of 3 years.
