Showing: KAWS – “HOLIDAY” Floating Companion @ Seokchon Lake (Seoul)

Judging from these photos, the long teased project from KAWS in Seoul has finally launched with his inflatable companion deployed in Seokchon Lake. Returning to Korea (see 2016) with a 92-foot-long (28 meters) floating HOLIDAY version of his signature character (and associated merch), the Brooklyn-based artist has harnessed the perfect relaxed vibe for this summertime installation. This piece is KAWS’ largest work to date and was masterminded by AllRightsReserved, follow in the footsteps of other similar installations like Florentijn Hofman’s giant floating duck in Hong Kong (covered). Interviews / Studio Visits: Sickboy

Sickboy’s red and yellow temples have been adorning Bristol’s dumpsters since the turn of the millennium.  Appearing like flowers blooming in the desert, their byzantine and seductive forms stand in stark contrast to the utilitarian and mundane objects on which they appear. The artist’s studio work has previously seen a broad array of cultural details filtered through a deeply surrealist imagination to create works which at one moment appear comforting and reassuring and at the next moment appear unnerving and unsettling. More recently, the canvases have seen […]

Brad Kunkle // FindShadow App

Artist Brad Kunkle recently shared a piece he painted that holds deep meaning for him, inspired by the 39 days it took for him to be reunited with his lost dog Shadow in 2015. Entitled The Golden Corridor and embellished with the New York-based artist’s practice of using of gold leaf, the diptych is steeped in symbolism from circumstances surrounding the incident. The painting now hangs in the offices of FindShadow in Downtown Manhattan, an app Kunkle helped create when he realized technology could lead to […]

Felice Varini Carcassonne Installation

Visible from May to September 2018, Felice Varini’s latest project is a striking installation at the medieval fortress of Carcassonne in Southern France. Spread on the west front of the city fortifications, 15 yellow circles (composed of temporary thin aluminium strips) all come together perfectly in the field of vision when standing facing one of the gates and is characteristic of the Swiss artist’s geometric perspective-localized paintings. The project from the Paris-based Varini celebrates the 20th anniversary of the inscription of the city on the world heritage […]

Recently in New York, Haroshi (featured) unveiled a new series of works at Petzel Gallery (35 E 67th Street location) for Tokyo’s Nanzuka Gallery as part of the second New York edition of Condo, a gallery share program. Known for his sculptural use of skate decks as a medium, the Japanese artist had 29 new pieces on view alongside works from Makoto Taniguchi & Mori Masato. Arranged in a circle, the sold out cleverly conceived half kaiju half wood pieces made for a striking installation. Discuss Haroshi here.

Showing: Gavin Lynch – “Letting go is hard” @ Angell Gallery

A couple weeks ago, Angell Gallery in Toronto opened a new solo from Gavin Lynch entitled Letting go is hard. A recent move east prompted a change in focus for the now Quebec-based artist’s paintings, and perhaps the title of the new body of work. Lynch further explains – “My new home in western Quebec shifted my paintings’ focus. They have become more about the quotidian moments of living in the woods – the small things you notice when hiking, gardening or camping – rather than […]
