Openings: Nate Frizzell – “I Should Know Who I Am By Now” @ LeBasse Projects

One of the many art hot spots bestowed upon the LA area last night was the unearthing of Nate Frizzell’s (interviewed) newest body of work, I Should Know Who I Am By Now (previewed), at LeBasse Projects. Almost exactly a year ago, the Riverside artist introduced himself in a big way to the warm embraces of collectors at the Culver City gallery. The passing time has allowed the artist’s vision to breath and his technique to mature into the unique visual narrative currently on display. […]

Openings: Joe Sorren – “Interruption” @ Grand Central Art Center

It was a star-studded affair last night in Southern California, as preeminent members of the ever-evolving New Contemporary movement, along with many collectors and casual observes alike, came out to the Grand Central Art Center to support Joe Sorren’s (featured) first comprehensive retrospective, Interruption (previewed). Chronicling the artist’s immense imagination and proficiency with a paintbrush, the exhibition unified his most well-known paintings from the past together with a impressive collection of new oil works. Displayed in tandem, and harkening back to Sorren’s earlier experiences transforming […]

Teaser: “Pattern Recognition” @ Subliminal Projects

On November 6th, Subliminal Projects will be opening a new show “Pattern Recognition”. The premise behind the title is that each artist included has in some way produced work that consists of reoccuring events or objects, not just in a literal sense though. Show up on Saturday night and you will be treated to the works of Seonna Hong, Nikki McClure, Dalek (interviewed), Richard Colman (interviewed), and Souther Salazar (some in progress works seen above). Of note, Souther will be reassembling his fantastic “Alejandro” installation […]

Frieze 2010: David Shrigley with Stephen Friedman Gallery

One of the highlights of our Frieze visit was stumbling upon the Stephen Friedman Gallery booth. As an unexpected surprise to us, the entire booth had been dedicated to an installation of David Shrigley’s work. Better still, David walked into the compound whilst we were there and started applying his temporary tattoos to a select few fans who had pre-registered – if only we were more on the ball then AM would be rocking some Shrigley ink of our own. Check out some of our […]

Set-up: Swoon – “Small Acts of Resistance” group show @ Black Rat Projects

Hot on the heels of the recent opening of her Fata Morgana solo show at Galerie L.J. in Paris, Swoon (interviewed) made a trip to London last week. AM had the pleasure of spending some time with the artist over a couple of days while she prepared a site-specific installation at Black Rat Projects for Small Acts of Resistance, a group show that will also feature works by Peter Kennard, Dotmasters, Matt Small (interviewed), Know Hope, and Armsrock (interviewed). The exhibition’s title references the recently-published book […]
