Openings: Dirk Skreber – “New Works” @ Blum & Poe

Long-time Blum & Poe artist Dirk Skreber makes his long-awaited return to the distinguished Los Angeles gallery.  This is his fourth solo exhibition at the Culver City institution.  The show features portraits of models created with foam tape laid above panels rolled with varnish, polyurethane, watercolor, enamel, spray paint, fluorescent paint and primer.  The artist burns or tears away the foam to reveal each image.  Conspicuously absent in the paintings is oil paint or any kind of brushwork, giving the works a sense of psychological […]

Openings: Lari Pittman – “New Paintings” @ Regen Projects

One of the finest galleries in Los Angeles, Regen Projects, recently opened a show of “New Paintings” by Lari Pittman. The vibrant, bright, vivid, and colorful paintings include a mixture of abstraction and figuration, each one intricate and expertly painted.  The works feature a dichotomy of “renewal/decay, secular/sacred, decorative/grotesque, hot/cold, sweet/toxic, taste/kitsch, mannered/unpredictable, transparency/opacity”.  Check out the show for yourself before it goes down Oct. 23. Jose Parla’s Concord Project Destined for The City of Toronto

There’s been a lot of buzz between Toronto and Brooklyn regarding Jose Parla’s incredible mural/installation called The Concord Project. We’ve pieced together this moving story with the help of our friend Simon at Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto. Basically, these pieces are destined for Toronto as a public arts project sponsored by Concord Pacific, in an effort to give back to the community. Jose started this project this summer and just finished it for the soon to be lucky residents of T-Dot. We’ll be bringing […]

Openings: “Misericordia” @ PRISM

As previewed by AM, Prism opened Misericordia last Friday night to a excited and fashionable Los Angeles crowd.  The show featured the excellent curatorial (the show was curated by Birte Kleemann, Director at The Pace Gallery) quality you expect from Prism and included pieces by some of the best artists working today, like Terence Koh, Sterling Ruby, and Chris Burden, alongside some works that were hundreds of years old.  The exploration of Mercy never looked so interesting. More opening images after the jump…

It appears that the city is preparing for the opening with assorted character wall paper installations to compliment the exhibition at the main entrances. There will also be specialized Kaws items available including shirts, mugs & stickers in their shop commemorating this event. Wish we […]

Another Update: Josh Keyes – “Collision” @ David B. Smith Gallery

We couldn’t resist posting another teaser pic that is possibly (there’s a good chance it’s a commission piece also due to its size) for Josh Keyes‘ (interviewed) upcoming show at David B. Smith Gallery. This monster piece (perhaps 120″ x 40″?) looks to be an further exploration of the “Sowing” concept that we first saw in his Swarm Gallery show last year. We can’t wait to see the completed piece when the show “Collision” opens in November. Discuss Josh Keyes here.

Teaser: Joe Sorren – “Interruption” @ Grand Central Art Center

Our friends at the go-to Bay Area art resource, Fecal Face (coverage of their 10 year show here), were able to recently pick sculptor Jud Bergeron’s brain about his collaboration with Joe Sorren (featured) for the acclaimed painter’s first retrospective exhibit, slated to open at California State University Fullerton’s Grand Central Art Center (GCAC) in Santa Ana on Saturday, November 10th. In an effort to shed some light on the collection of unique sculptures produced exclusively for this milestone occasion, entitled “Interruption”, the insightful interview […]
