Second Helpings: October 2009

October has come on gone in a blink of an eye, like the autumn leaves soon will be as we roll towards winter. There as been one great show after another; kinda overwhelming in a great way as we bring you another segment of Second Helpings to recap some of the juiciest stories of the month. Get served after the jump.

Preview: Josh Keyes – “Fragment” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

It doesn’t take much from Josh Keyes (interviewed) to throw us into a frenzy here at the AM offices. Two recent images have leaked from his upcoming show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in January that have us excited for his new body of work that will be entitled “Fragment.” We’ll have more coverage to follow as the show nears, but make sure to check out the other image after the jump…

Preview: “Go Get Your Shinebox” @ Brooklynite Gallery

Brooklynite Gallery has a pretty interesting show opening on the 21st of this month entitled “Go Get Your Shinebox.” Artists were asked to create their vision of what a “shoeshine box” was, the simplest way to make a living during the economic downturn and perhaps even take a step further to create “survival boxes.” With such a open ended theme show, you can expect a varied response with boxes of all shapes and sizes. Take a look at more after the jump…

Openings: “The Kids Are Alright” @ LeBasse Projects

We were pleasantly surprised the other day when we stopped by for the opening of Nate Frizzell’s show at LeBasse Projects. Showing concurrently in the smaller gallery was “The Kids Are Alright,” essentially the younger up-and-coming talent of the LeBasse family – artists like Dominique Fung, Jeremy Asher Lynch, and Nimit Malavia. Take a look at all the pics after the jump…

Openings: LIVESTRONG x Nike Stages Exhibition (NYC) @ Deitch Projects

As anticipated, the highly praised “Stages” exhibition made it’s US debut yesterday in a beautiful pop-up space hosted by Deitch Projects in New York’s Soho district. As we mentioned when the show debuted in Paris (covered), “Stages” is a traveling exhibition curated by Nike and Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation to elevate awareness of the fight against cancer with some of the art world’s most influential artists. AM was invited to attend the press preview and to speak with the all-star cast of artists about their works. We […]

Preview: Ron English – “Immortal Underground” @ Opera Gallery (New York)

As we mentioned yesterday, Ron English (featured) is looking for “cowgirls” for a special performance during the opening of his “Immortal Underground” exhibition.  Just half a year after his solo at Elms Lester (covered) and curating the “Nimbus Vapor” show (covered) earlier this month, he’s back with a new body of work on November 12th at the Opera Gallery in New York. Take a look at some preview images after the jump…

Andy Warhol Donation to MoMA Rejected in 1956

Collect art long enough and you will start to reminisce about those pieces you had the opportunity to purchase, but passed on.  Those works are now out of your budget and you think you will never again have the chance at buying from that artist again.  Now, consider how you would feel if someone offered you the same artwork, but instead of having to pay for it, you get it for free…and you turn it down.  Then, start to imagine that said artist turns out […]

Preview: Oliver Vernon – “Double Down” @ Irvine Contemporary

Our friend Oliver Vernon is about to premier a new set of work at the Irvine Contemporary tonight (6pm).  The show “Double Down” consists of the next stage in Oliver’s already psychedelic and well rendered 3-D visual works, utilizing gouache, ink and acrylic to create his complex compositions. During his show at Joshua Liner Gallery (covered) and his last show down here in DC (covered), we caught ourselves and others staring at his work trying to take in all the detail. Another incentive to stop […]

Ron English Cowgirl Casting Call

For a certain subset of art fans, there is no greater joy than participating in the creation of art themselves. For example, it could be posing for live drawing sessions like Dr. Sketchy’s (seen above), becoming photoreferences for their favorite artists’ paintings, or playing a part in an art show’s opening festivities. It seems the next opportunity has come knocking… Ron English’s (featured) show “Immortal Underground” will be opening at the New York Opera Gallery on November 12th.  He is now holding a casting call […]
