Streets: RVA Street Art Festival (Part II)

Last week, Jeff Soto (interviewed) sent over some in-progress photos from the RVA Street Art Festival in Richmond, Virginia where artists like Dalek, Mark Jenkins, Pose, Richard Colman, and others were painting murals along the James River Power Plant Building and Floodwall. Jeff has now followed up those pics with some of of the completed walls including areas where artist’s work leaked into each other’s field leading to some sweet collaborative work. James Marshall (Dalek) recently opened a show at the Womb Gallery in Oklahoma City featuring some minimalistic geometric paintings that bring to mind the nurturing motherly environs referenced by the name of the gallery. A couple Saturdays ago, the inaugural MTV RE:DEFINE benefit exhibition and auction opened at the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas. As we previewed a couple weeks back, curators, The Future Tense, brought together an impressive roster of 30 emerging and established artists in the contemporary and urban/street art genres – including such big names as Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey, Harland Miller, Faile, Russell Young and Tracey Emin – to commemorate 30 years of AIDS research. A couple Fridays ago, Orange County was treated to a captivating installation by James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed) at the Hurley Space Gallery. Immersed in all directions by the New York-based artist’s geometric creations, viewers were also introduced to a matching line of Phantom 4D Board Shorts as well as some surfboards and bikes. A couple weeks ago, the Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto hosted new work from Dalek (interviewed) and Greg Lamarche (interviewed). Masters of structured typography and geometric shapes, the two displayed impeccable linework as well as balanced compositions in the paintings they brought. Continuing to work closely with Hurley, James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed) will be debuting his designs for the new Phantom 4D Board Shorts next month at the Hurley Space Gallery in Costa Mesa on the Hurley Campus. Tonight in Toronto, a pair of geometrically inclined artists will be teaming up at the Show & Tell Gallery. Aptly named Geometric Balance, the joint showing will feature Dalek’s (interviewed) space monkey abstractions and Greg Lamarche (interviewed) typographic shapes. After ten straight days of painting, albeit with the help of some university art students, Dalek (interviewed) has completed a massive four panel, site-specific installation within the Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama.
